I just bought 1996 chevy lumina saturday. the battery was dead and dealer charged it. I went to autozone because the check engine light is on and had them hook it up to their computer and it couldn't read. the guy at autozone said I have a blown fuse somewhere and a bad battery. he said it would be fine through the weekend and it was. Everything has worked on the car as far as I know of except the horn. blown horn fuse maybe? Monday I went to the store about 15 mins away, and about 30-40 mins later, I get in and the car acts like it wants to start but doesn't. I got a jump and the car ran fine and I got home. Tuesday I started and drove the car, no problems, bought a battery and changed it. No problems until today, I went to the gas station about 2.7 miles away, went in and 2 mins later came out and the car wouldn't start. I heard it clicking this time but it didn't start. I got a jump and the car ran fine for 1-2 hours. I took it to a different autozone and had my alternator checked and the man said I had a bad battery. I started it back up and went to the place I bought the battery and I tolled the worker the problem, he brought out equipment to check my voltage...it read less than 13.2 and he tolled me my car was not recharging itself and it was draining while my car was running. He also noticed the I think negative battery ground cable/wire that connected to the engine block was loose. And he said that could be the problem right there. I left his store and not even halfway down the street the car for the first time cuts off completely! I tried starting it and this time I heard no clicking. I walked back to the store and they have me a jump and the car ran just fine all the way home from the easy side of town to the west. I tried to tighten the the bolt to make the loose wire/cable tight again but I was unsuccessful! I used a 40 piece ratchet set and pliers. Is there something else that could be causing my battery to die,? such as a blown fuse? dont know where, I think the horn! And also how can I get the wire/cable tight, get the bolt tighten to solve the problem, if that's it? Help me please. I don't know to much about cars and this is the only family transportation I have. With little to no money to spend on a high priced mechanic. Thank you guys very much

Well if you have a loose ground cable, you need to take care of that 1st. If the bolt won't tighten any more, then it's possible it's too long & bottoming out. Either get a shorter bolt or get some washer to shim up the original bolt. Then retest the charging system. It really needs to be in the 13.8 to 14.8 range.
