1999 CHEVY S10 PICKUP INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

I HAVE A CHEVY S10 PICKUP THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER KEEPS BLINKING ON AND OFF SOMETIMES IS DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. I CHECKED ALL THE FUSES AND I REMOVED THE CLUSTER AND EVERYTHING SEEMS FINE. NOW WHEN I ATTACH MY CODE READER TO IT THE LIGHTS AND THE GAUGES START TO WORK AGAIN. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY. CAN YOU PLEASE SUGGUEST SOMETHING. THANK YOU

Are you saying that the cluster only works when the code reader is connected? If so, that is strange; unless via the data link connector the code reader is supplying a path to ground that the cluster is missing? Maybe check the ground circuit for the cluster; you’ll find the ground wire at the back of the cluster in the connector, terminal B3 a black wire. This black wire goes to a splice pack near the ashtray. A splice packs (for grounds) are a metal bar where you’ll find a number of other wires plugged or bolted to it. They’ve started using splice packs as a common area to supply ground for different items; think of it as an electrical manifold. Once you find the pack you’ll notice that one of the wires will be bolted to a metal brace or the body. According to the wiring diagram you should find this main splice pack grounding wire on the right side of the dash. I know this isn’t a whole lot of help but maybe a place to start looking? Dan.
