1999 Chevy Tahoe Sign In

My Tahoe has 198,500 miles on it runs great no leaks doesn't burn a drop of oil. HOWEVER to day a very strange thing happened. When I started it up the Tac stayed on 0 and the speedometer went up to 90mph but I was doing about 50mph the Tac then went to 4000rpm but I know the engine was at about 2000rpm. The acceleration also became quite sluggish like it was being held back. Then the service engine soon light came on and the check guages light blinked on and off. The gas guage needle also started bouncing back and fourth !!!!! The vehicle has a remote starter system and when shut off the engine I also pushed the remote starter the car started and I then used the remote shut off to turn the engine off. At that point the Tac started working fine but the service engine light stayed on. WHAT is going on ????????????

Will need to know engine - bet is a Vortec 5.7.

Get a code reading soon as it will be helpful to direct you to what's wrong. The vehicle (near any) with light on will have something to say. All this with tach and speed are sensed thru sensors I believe and the code(s) should help,

Tom,
It is a 5.7 somehow I think it is related to the remote starting system ????

Re: 1999 Chevy Tahoe Sign In

Again the bet is you are right and I'd find out how to properly get the remote start out and any wiring tapped into restored properly. I know those things are handy but who knows what that junk will cause even if well installed it's messing with the vehicle's wiring and systems and becomes the problem.

At lot of headaches come from aftermarket stuff, theft devices, stereo and about anything that doesn't just plug into a power port. You have some expensive electronics that's being messed with and GM isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to OE wiring stuff let alone taping it for toys.

Really, I suggest getting that out or if recently installed back to who did it. Upon the re-read it is the likely cause and the codes may be all screwed up??
