2001 Ford F-250,4W/D,V-10,79000 miles,auto trans.
Instr.panel blows fuses immeadiately most of the time. This also controls my 4 W/D and speedometer. This started 6 months ago when it started blowing that fuse.I took it to several shops and was told they may have to keep it for several days trying to find the problem. I needed the truck daily to work out of.
Needing the 4 W/D a few times I noticed it temporarily held the fuse until I killed truck and started it back.Blown fuse each time. This weekend I found the cause but not the remedy. It ONLY blows the fuse when I put it in PARK.
It will hold if I use only neutral and do not hit park. (hard to remember, out of habit)

Start out with a visual inspection inside & out.

Check out the linkage at the tranny & under the dash while moving the selector, see if any wires or harnesses are being hit by the linkage movement......

What is the fuse number?

I tried tracing the wires last week and found no problem. Is there some kind of a safety switch in that area that has gone bad.Fuse has held for 4 days since I do Not put it in park, which would blow the fuse at that very time.

Thanks!

I have tried several times to run down my problem ,while using my owners manual,Needless to say I just found out, from your question ,that I have misplaced my manual, but I believe it to be fuse # 19

Thanks!

Assuming that this fuse is located in the central fuse block inside the cab, it protects the circuits for the auxiliary powertrain control module, clutch pedal position switch(if manual), idle validation switch, overhead trip computer module, general electric module (GEM), overdrive cancel switch, instrument cluster, and dash reset relay.

Now, you stated that when you move the shift lever to park it seemed to cause the short to occur. I would be really checking the overdrive cancel switch wiring since that goes through the middle of the shift lever and at the pivot point in the steering column.

Interesting pt.about the o/d switch. In thinking back a few months ,the END of my o/d button came off of the shift lever end about the time I 1st. was having problems. At that time I checked for any wires on end and saw none.Icould never get it to stay on.Could be related?? How does that come apart on the end of shift lever to inspect for
that being my wiring prob. if that is it.????

I don't think it comes apart. You actually have to buy the whole lever for the OD button I believe.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to remove the column shrouds and take a look at the wiring. You could also unplug the connector for it and see if your fuse stops blowing when you put it up into park.
