2001 Impala 3.4 Parasitic Draw Sign In

.44A draw on BCM/Cluster circuit. 10A fuse left instrument panel fuse box. Any common issues on these? I notice that when I pull fuse and reinstall, I can hear the motors in cluster cycle real quick, not sure if thats normal? There are three connectors on BCM. Pulling the smallest one eliminates the draw. The other two have no affect. Any easy way to isolate those circuits?

How about if you remove the cluster and unplug it?

Re: 2001 Impala 3.4 Parasitic Draw Sign In

I just went trough something like this on a 01 Silverado; not like GM trucks having an issue with their clusters. LOL

Had .75amp draw on the cluster fuse and also had speedo and fuel gauge stepper motors acting up; needles wouldn't always return to the bottom after a gauge sweep command.
Changed out the stepper motors didn't see any burn marks on the board; but when I plugged it back in, I still had the draw. After making a bunch of calls to the electronic people I deal with; I was told to take a soft bristle nylon brush (Bottle brush) and scrub the board with it and contact cleaner. Did that plugged it back in and everyone went to sleep after about 30 seconds and the excessive draw was gone.
I guess on some of these older boards like to collect dust on them and some of this dust would conduct electricity and short the board causing a draw.
If cleaning it didn't work I was told a new cluster would likely be needed.

But like HT asked does the draw disappear with the cluster disconnected?

Dan.

its been mentioned but not so clearly, you must wait for the modules to go to 'sleep'- called power down, at least 30minutes, door closed key out of ign, before checking draw.

As with any electrical issue I always ask - is vehicle stock? any aftermarket add ons ie remote start, alarms, audio, lighting would be first ssuspect.

Re: 2001 Impala 3.4 Parasitic Draw Sign In

Unplugged cluster and dropped about .2A. In the process I found a second ignition switch tucked away in the dash with a key in it, zip tied to stay in on position. LOL Looks like they didnt want to program a new key so they left the transponder wires connected to the old switch, turned the key on, and left it. So Im gonna replace the cluster and fix the ignition issues and retest. Didnt make any difference on the draw with that key turned to off, but it needs to be fixed anyway, so Ill go from there. Maybe security system wouldnt go to sleep? Just a guess.

Re: 2001 Impala 3.4 Parasitic Draw Sign In

I wanted a story time from DS to help me. ;) I had to pull the car out to get a different vehicle in after finding the circuit that was drawing. So in the meantime i was hoping one of you had a magic wand to help me for when I could get it back in. In the end I just gave up and started tearing the dash down.

Re: 2001 Impala 3.4 Parasitic Draw Sign In

Figured Id mention for future visitors to the thread: The vehicle had an aftermarket stereo installed with a Scosche gm interface/chime module. The chime on this vehicle normally runs through the stock stereo and speakers. This interface has a small speaker to replace the stock functionality. This interface/chime was drawing around .15A.

BTW thanks DS Next time im calling in Steve-O to find my parasites
