2002 dodge stratus rt

My battery has this little box on my positive terminal. I took it off to replace it with new terminal end now car has a hard start and negative battery terminal gets hot and starts to smoke

That little box was the main fusible link. I suggest you either replace it or give the fire department a heads up.
You didn't recently work on the alternator did you?

No only thing I have done is change battery but previous owner changed the starter
|

Is this smoking as soon as you hook the cable up or when you try to start it?

When I try to start it. It only smokes from the negative side

That means you have a bad connection on the negative terminal. I would replace that terminal and clean everything real good with a wire brush in the process.

? Me too. OP: If I read this as intended by you, you just replaced a cable U-Bolt end at the battery and noticed this - right?
Still would be some co-incidence the neg cable end isn't very good either just meaning all that surface it could have it isn't getting much contact so forcing the load of a starter (#1 load on a battery) to heat it up.
Yes, that like overloading low gauge wire to do more than intended would get hot and maybe let go. I would say get the best cable ends you can already one new the other needed it's showing heat right there can't be any good either.
At this time parts slower or N/A fast and think you should rush this isn't good for this as a car overall or any underpowered electrical note I did find just the other day Autozone had top post battery cable shims I hadn't seen since leaded fuel but are zinc in my stock now just for this as temporary fix it tough to find better cable ends.
It's nasty right where I am deliveries, short supplies and hours but nobody is going anywhere either noted low stock of assorted stuff of any type hardware and parts allowed to be open if you wear a space suit far from amusing,

Sorry, web is at a snail's pace. They make a "reamer" to match new cable taper to posts if needed since NEW didn't work alone it may just be a lousy fit??
