03 Grand Caravan ES 3.8L (205,000 miles) Engine would not start back up after short 50 mile trip. Recently, new radiator, new alternator and new battery. All was functioning til now. Battery fully charged. Dash light are all lit up when turn key, but no starter action. Started troubleshooting by replacing starter relay ( no affect), then pulled out ECM. I noticed black rub marks on ECM connector and a small hole rubbed in upper radiator hose. (Hose was touching ECM, must have been to long, and I had had some loss of radiator fluid recently.) checked continuity from Pin 31 to Pin 85, found to be "open" or no continuity. Could the spray of antifreeze on connector and ECM have caused shorting, then and open in harness/connector? If so, how hard is it to replace wiring harness. I don't want to have to replace ECM if it is not the problem. How should I now proceed with troubleshooting?

Are you sure you are checking pin 31 of the correct connector? Do the wire colors match? Have you tried an overlay wire? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

lets be sure we are all on same page - use a scanner and post all codes. Advise us of any issues. just the no starter is only issue? Do you have remote starter? - my 1st suspect. I am guessing pin 31 is connector C1pin 31 on PCM and 85 is reference to starter relay terminal? Did you check the IPM they are a known problem. knowing where you probed for continuity would matter. Why replace entire harness for 1 damaged wire?

I'll check wire colors and make sure I'm probing correctly. Also, I checked continuity between starter wire ( yellow w/ grey stripe) and socket/pin 87 of starter relay in fuse box, and found continuity. So I assume that signal is getting to starter. What is meant by "overlay?"

The wire you are probing should be Dk Grn with Orange at both ends. Overlay means snipping the wire at both ends and connecting an externally run wire to eliminate the internal wire entirely. That's the way we normally repair this stuff if that single wire is the only one damaged. If you have multiple wires melted together, then you are going to have to open the harness and repair them. Look the harness over carefully for any spots that are burnt, pinched or rubbing on something it shouldn't.

Don't have a scanner. Getting one..... Recently had battery dead issues, replaced alternator and battery, seemed to solve battery charging issue. I have not attempted to jump start van with other vehicle and fully charged battery. ?? I probed pin 31 on PCM and pin 85 on SR terminal. Will double check. As far as the starter, usually it just fires right up. But, Before I put in new battery and alternator, van would not start unless battery was charged and jumped van with other car. Have not checked IPM (integrated power module),will do.

what about remote starter? that would be in circuits you are concerned with.

Thanks for the help. I'm taken ECM in to be checked out. I'm pretty sure it's the culprit. 3rd on since 2003.

I thought you confirmed a problem with the wiring. How did you make the leap to the ECM. Make sure the security system isn't locking you out.
