my son said his 2003 civic gauges took a nose dive and returned to normal while he was driving , happened once on two consecutive days , he said this affected nothing else , any ideas what this could be ? We just bought the car , it's in good shape and drives good otherwise ..

There is one 7.5A fuse that powers it. It really has to be either an issue with that fuse or it's wiring or the cluster itself.

There is also a ground under the assembly.

It's G501

I took that fuse out and the tangs were little discolored ( ???) , cleaned it up and put it back in we'll see if that makes a difference .

Sure can be that. Just got this so no pattern to know if it never does it again. Stuff anywhere like it, I tend to if only a drop of silicone that dries if out or apart anyway - assorted anything like that then my OWN (would know) lasts and never there again for same thing, Tom

If the tangs are discolored it's because they are overheated. Chances are the contacts have lost tension and causing too much resistance. The contacts have to be either tightened up or the box replaced. You can usually bend the contacts slightly to tighten them using a pick.
