2004 Buick LeSabre fuel gauge problem Sign In

Hey Guys,
New to the forum. Hoping someone can shed some light. I have a 2004 Buick LeSabre with the 3800 V6 engine that my son normally drives. Just yesterday the fuel gauge started acting erratically. The car had an almost full tank of gas, but was registering just above E. When I cycled the key a few times the needle would move clockwise, but then wouldn't return back to it's starting position. At this point the needle is pointing at about the 7 o'clock position. I've read enough about this issue that most people seem to think it's a sending unit issue, but the one thing that also seems relevant is that the "fuel range" on the message center still seems accurate. My son filled up the car today and the fuel range went up although the needle still isn't working. Wouldn't that suggest the sending unit is accurate and that I have an IP issue? If it is an IP issue do I have an option other than having it rebuilt for $$$$? All other gauges on the IP are working fine.

Thanks.

Jason

You'll probably need to take it to a shop that has a high end scan tool. With the tool that can look for sender codes, look at sender datastream information, and do bi directional tests of the gauges in the instrument cluster.

With enough data gathered from those tests, the culprit shouldn't be too hard to pinpoint.
