2004 Pontiac Grand Am: Won't start
|
|
|
Two days ago it was running fine and on the way to work the battery light came on. When going to the store after work the car died and my daughter then jumped the car so that I could make it to her house. The next day she changed the alternator and the car ran fine all day. This morning I go to start the car and there is nothing. She came to try to jump it and said that there was no electrical in the car. The battery tested good and the alternator was replaced yesterday. There is no noise when trying to start it, no dinging of the car door open and the gauges on the dash jump from right then back to left and then there is nothing. She let the battery charge for 30 minutes and still no sign of life to the car. Once again battery and alternator are good, just no electrical.

Was the battery tested? Is that how you know it was good? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Did somebody hook the cables up backwards, even for a second? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The battery is only 2 weeks old and creates a spark when the jumper cables are accidently touched. No it hasnt been specifically connected to a voltmeter.

No power to anything after charging battery or jumping it? The little bolts at battery cables at battery just go to the battery. Under the rubber (hard now) covers they are probably about missing from corrosion so nothing gets from battery to anything if so. A place to check, T

The battery was tested and was in good shape. My daughter ended up taking the starter off and having that tested and it was bad. She replaced the starter and it still wouldn't work. She then took jumper cables from the positive post on the battery and ran that to the starter and it started right up. She fixed the positive battery cable and now the car is good to go. Thank you all for your help.

That's what I was thinking. The bolt to battery is only to the battery if cable isn't connecting about like charging or testing it behaving like it's out of the car entirely. You seem to have found it and fixed it. I'll lock the thread as solved and can be re-opened by any moderator at your request as you wish. Good luck, T
