2006 Honda Civic

Hi,
When the hazard lights are turned on, there is a thumping sound that seems to originate in the center console in front of the gear shifter. You can actually feel the thump when you place your hand on the center console by where your feet are. ( I hope I am using the term center console properly -- it's the area between the seats that goes under the dash. ) When the brakes are depressed the thumping sound disappears. Also, the thumping noise is quite noticeable. I bought the car brand new and the thumping noises are not normal or the standard clicking sound. Anyone have any ideas?

Just wondering what this sound was and whether I can fix it by replacing a part or if it is something that I need to take care of right away.
( I am assuming this is an electrical issue, but not sure. )

Thank you.

I don't know if you are exaggerating about the "thumping" but there is a flasher relay that would make a clicking noise normally.

Do the hazard lights and all work properly and you use them with some frequency? May be normal as HT just said.

Lost from my own list of things to do is put in listed known louder flashers - other vehicles that are sold on purpose to hear them better and you may already have that?

Thanks for replying. I am not exaggerating. I bought the car brand new. The thumping on the center console is not the standard clicking. You can feel the thump on the console when you place you hand on the center console by the foot area.

Thanks for the reply.

The hazard lights work fine. I do not use the hazards unless I am stopped on the side of a road or double-parked. ( This does not happen often. )

I updated the description to include some other pieces of information. The thumping disappears when the brakes are depressed.

Thanks.

The noise/thumping quits with the brakes because they probably use the same rear bulbs and don't flash anymore if brakes applied.

OK - Since this is new to you and pretty sure not normal why not just let a tech of you choice take a look or even replace the flasher as IDK, you described about where many are which is low behind panels of dash some just kind of hanging or taped to a harness NOT a very common item or doubles with directional flasher and just may be more noisy than it should or touching something for a reason unknown causing this.

I haven't gone of a parts hunt for how flashers are done on this - one, two units or how. If it makes noise you or the tech of choice will find it and feel it in hand or see a reason why when there,

Thanks for the advice.

I was hoping to understand if this was a serious issue or not. I assume it is not that serious right now, so I will wait until the next oil change.

I'll reply back here when the cause is discovered.

One flasher shown (could be wrong) like this if so...............

If you busted up old one you'd see copper coils and points inside much like some relays. Why it got noisy? IDK. Says this was $12.99US but range up or down a few bucks by brand and in stock aftermarket parts.

Probably said you, or I do if not in fuse box just listen and feel for the things in my hand as possible and make sure if wrapped up by tape or who knows it's secured out of the way and not touching anything that would be a problem - probably use a wire tie if OE was just electrical tape. That I can't say for each?

Finally had time to take apart the center console. The sound is coming from the shift lock solenoid turning on and off.

I assume it's chasing down a ground wire issue? Or does anyone thing I should try something else? Also, now the radio blinks when I use the turn signal. Are these problems related?

Thanks in advance.

Oh, oh - does this have an aftermarket radio where possible installed by just finding live wires to tap in to? Ick - that could explain some bizarre behavior,

It's the standard radio. No mods were done to tax the electrical.

I'm thinking the ground wire must be old. Going to do a quick test with alligator clips later.

I assume the other issue is a shor now.

Your call. If I suspect erratic grounds to dash items especially I'll use good alligator clip end jump wire to known ground like a door jam latch hook to dash metal sometimes things work so then go hunting or if too much and not critical add a ground strap carefully thought out not to be in the way to things that should be grounded anyway and failed unseen someplace when not worth finding out where or why.

Funny you called thing "thumping" and wonder if that sound is coming out of the radio? Just a wild thought,

Actually, there were two separate issues. The ground will deal with the radio flashing, which is a separate issue. The thumping of the shift lock solenoid when the hazard lights are on to my guess now is a shorted wire.

Thanks for the idea. I think that may be the quickest fix.

It's just me sometimes with strange issues to look for a common denominator. Remember that almost all shift locks are sensing brake LIGHTS most are shared with bulbs that would work with hazards just all not just the rear brake bulbs. So it all might be one weak ground. Educated guess with two things in common or more.

In my experience wires that are OE are usually placed properly and if rubbing, broken was from some other work that moved them? Anything aftermarket involved has been a problem area all over this site and in real life just as much,

The solution was a poor ground in the trunk area by the rear left tail light. It aeems to have fixed both issues.

Thanks for the help and ideas about where to look. I actually started under the hood, moved to the center console area and finally at the trunk. I should have started at the trunk.

Live and learn.

Sounds good and will close as solved. YOU can ask any moderator to reopen it upon request,
