2006 Taurus Battery dies in rain Sign In

I have a 2006 ford taurus. for a while, if it rained or got too cold, the battery would be dead in the morning. Jump start it and it would be fine until the next rain. Last november, it died and took an extra long time to get a charge to start it. Brought it to advanced who said the battery was shot. Put in a new battery, no problem for two months. This weekend, had a good rain for two days. Of course, it wouldnt start, so i tried using my jump starter and it just wouldnt seem to give it enough charge to start. So, I called a tow truck who came a jumped it and it started right up. Went to lock the house door while it was running and when my son hit the unlock button to open the door for me, it just died. No sputter, nothing, just completely dead, like a switch turne off. Tried to restart it and absolutely nothing. battery is dead again. Any ideas? Right now, I am leaning towards the alternator, but seems kind of weird to only die when it is parked and raining.

You don't "lean toward" things, you actually test them.

You need to test the battery first because the discharge may have killed it and once you have a good battery, test the charging system. When all that is done and no problem found, then you have to test for a parasitic draw on the battery. You may have to do this under the condition that causes the problem like during the rain in case the moisture is effecting something electronic.

I do understand that. I do not currently possess the equipment needed to test the battery or the charging system. Was just hoping to find a little more information before I went to a garage. Did not want to go in completely blind, you know? Thank you for the information.

There really isn't much you need to know first except that you have to test the battery, the charging system and parasitic drain in that order and that since the problem seems to only show up in wet weather, you may have to test under those circumstances.
You have to have a known good battery before testing the charging system to get an accurate test.
