I really need some good advise. Here is the back story.
Bought my 2015 Honda Fit in Phoenix AZ. Had the car there until August of 2017. Never had any issues with the car battery or really anything in that time frame. Then I shipped the car to the suburbs of Illinois. On Sept 29th my car would not start so I got a jump and headed to Honda dealership in the suburbs where I am living now. They replaced the battery since it was under warranty.

On Dec 26th, 2017 my car would not start one morning and Chicago has been in the single digits. Some I got a jump and headed to Honda again. They checked everything out AGAIN and said that the battery was fine and just cold and I needed to drive it further and longer to charge the battery. Well I work 1 mile from home and work a 10 hour day and driving around randomly every day it just not possible. Every day since Dec 26th my car has not started at least once per day.

So on January 3rd, 2018 Honda sent some guys to jump it and I drove back to Honda again. They took it for 1.5 days (they still have it) and called to tell me that they have searched high and low for causes of why this is happening and the only thing they discovered was some tracking device that has been installed on my vehicle "after market" that could be draining the battery.

So they called the Honda dealer that I purchased the car from in Phoenix and they said there was nothing installed on my vehicle back in May of 2015. The advisor in IL sent me 2 pictures, one of the device and one of the receiver. I have only had my car serviced at the Honda dealer in Phoenix, 1 oil change at another Honda dealer when I was out traveling around and now the Honda dealer here in suburbs of Chicago. If the Honda dealer in Phoenix is lying and put this tracking device on my car, wouldn't I have had issues in the 2.5 years that I have had the car in Phoenix.

Also, the battery is brand new as of Dec 26th so if anything all the problems have been since Honda in Illinois has had it. Also, I work with someone that has a 2014 Honda Fit and has NEVER had any of these issues with their battery. My car does not have a key and is started with a push start and I have a key fob.

Could someone please look at these pictures to see if they can identify what this mystery box is. Honda in Illinois will not touch it since they said it was put on after market purchase and they cannot remove it. I cannot go through a whole winter with having to jump start my car every day. Putting it in a garage is not an option. I live in an apartment and it is parked in off street outside parking. Can anyone help me? I uploaded the 2 pictures but I don't see them showing on my post.

Yes, uploading pictures is a bit of a pain here.

Here are some instructions

http://autoforums.carjunky.com/...LOAD_PHOTOS_P151389/

PS, no reputable dealer would ever install an aftermarket tracking device without the owners knowledge. They could be charged with a criminal offense. The most common source of something like that is a suspicious spouse.

Hi,
Thanks for your directions on the photo upload. I have them on the post now. I do not have a suspicious spouse, nor have I ever had a spouse or anyone else in my car to be honest so no one has ever had access to my car except for the Honda people.

This is a first or what they do for certain reasons in some states - just heard of it. Something like a DWI where you are NOT allowed to drive anymore or can only be so far away if you wish to drive like just for work it would know or know you weren't following the rules for that matter IDK how it would know who was driving it.

Point is you (in just the cases I only heard of) become responsible for any damage to your vehicle that installing the thing may do. Just follow those red + green wires shown they probably splice in all hacked up or device really could be somehow drawing current send off a signal only heard by some other concern.

The dealer saw it in IL and AZ said nothing was done there so perhaps before that? It doesn't serve any purpose anymore and should be removed IMO. Can't know but it doesn't belong there for all I know it was meant to disable the vehicle or some other tracking for who knows what reason.

There's no reason to leave it and you have a problem perhaps didn't show up as a drain if checked for that at all?
You've been dealer loyal it seems with just the two. I can sort of believe they just don't want to deal with it. IDK - perhaps seek out a reputable independent shop to remove the thing. There may be a history trail of who owned or had custody of this car back when or not? It's in question so as said would have it removed and checked for a parasitic draw before and after obviously it COULD be the problem,

Every state has different laws, I'm not familiar with what is legal & what isn't (nor do I care Sly)

That being said, the last shop I worked at had a couple of used car lots that did in house financing and on the higher end cars they would have us install gps tracking units in them.

Those trackers looked nothing like what you have...1st, they are single units with 4 to 5 wires that looks like a large flash drive...2nd they are installed in a place that isn't easily found....buried under dash or behind a panel in the trunk...

That unit looks like an AM alarm....

What ever it is....it isn't factory and since you aren't using it and more than likely is now causing a parasitic draw, i would have it removed before it malfunctions all the way and causes a no crank condition....

What is the logo on the black box? Why would a GPS tracker be wired into the starting system?

Yes, that looks more like an aftermarket alarm than a tracking device.

I'm deleting your pictures now because they are way too large and making the thread too hard to read. If you reduce the size you can repost them but most of us have already seen them now.

It would be better if you had a picture of the label on that module.

Thank you for replying. I ended up speaking to the GM at the Honda dealer in Phoenix. He told me that due to high theft in their dealership they install tracking devices on all their cars. After you purchase a car you can elect to have it activated or not. So I did not purchase the activation back when I purchased it brand new. So now he's hooking me up with somebody in Chicago from the alarm company that's going to be able to remove the device off my car. Not sure why it's starting to drain my battery two and a half years later but he seems to think that that could be what's causing it. I will post more once I hear back from the alarm company and how I'm going to proceed. Thank you for all your feedback and help.

Great - you have a reason how this could be there at all. It may not be the cause of any problem it just doesn't belong in your car aftermarket. That crap is so cheap and just things of the sort famous for hacking up wiring lookin for just any live wire without a clue what they tapped into is the reason I'd get rid of it properly.
Shat - If you want a tracking device just leave a throw away (pre-paid) cell phone hidden and charged you can find where those are long after you stop paying for them.
Still not real sure what the thing is from the pics just drill away and mount some item in sight like that is hack all by itself,

Well of course I got out of work and my car did not start again. It's 830 at night and 11 degrees. So had to wait for someone to jump me. It looks like Phoenix Honda is going to find me someone here in Chicago to remove this tracking device but no one even knows if that is the true reason for the battery drain. I have been dealing with this since the day after Christmas and here it is the 5th already. I noticed tonight that there are 3 lights blinking on my car after I push the door lock button in to lock it. I never saw so many lights blinking before but maybe I wasn't looking for them. One next to the CD player on the audio system blinking red (not sure why that's happening), one on the dashboard for the security system alarm blinking red and one down below by the hood release latch for this tracking device blinking very fast in yellow. I really have loved driving this car but I'm ready to get rid of it.

Doesn't make much sense to use a flashing light for a tracking device. Kinda defeats the whole purpose of silent tracking.

If the dealer is struggling with finding the draw, you may want to take it to an electrical shop......Some draws can be a pain to find but you usually have some idea of where it's coming from...

That sure looks like an alarm..... As HT implied, gps & trackers are pointless if someone knows they are there....

I can't tell you how many AM alarms I've had to remove that most customers didn't even know that had that "woke up" (for whatever reason) and started doing their job & disabled the starter....

That makes a lot of sense. And I feel that my car has definitely been "awoken." It's probably telling me to get the heck out of this cold weather!! I am getting it removed today. Waiting for my brother to come and jump start me so we can drive over to the place to have it done.

You could try parasitic draw diag 101....

Put the car in a garage at night....go out there when it's pitch black and look around the car, glovebox, trunk, etc....and see if you see light coming from anywhere.....If you do, then you just found your draw....

I did that it and posted it in earlier post. There's three lights blinking. One of them is about to be removed so that should stop. Then I'm just left with the lock alarm and the audio blinking light. I've never seen this blink before but I have always seen the lock alarm blinking.

A mechanic wanted to charge me $125 to remove it and I ended up removing it myself and that took care of all the battery issues I was having. I saved myself money and I learned a lot about GPS tracking devices. Thanks for all your comments and support.

OK - Not surprised at that for a charge to do much of anything just hope you removed any connections and left wires in proper shape so it doesn't act up again. Sure seems if removing it hasn't repeated the problem that was the problem.
Another is if you removed that thing with lights fastened by the two Phillips head screws and don't like the holes that can be patched adequately by a detail shop cost about what they wanted just to remove the thing or close just for that.

Let's close this out as solved. You can request it re-opened by any moderator. Good luck for the long term fix with this,

T
