I was driving to work today, when I drove across some railroad tracks. My CD stopped playing, from what I thought was skipping. Another set of RR tracks, and it did the same thing, but I noticed that the radio had actually turned off, then back on. I have some gauges connected next to the radio, and they started to move erratically. Very shortly after that, everything shut off, and then smoke started pouring out from behind the radio and gauges. There's no power to anything, including lights in the dash. And of course the car wouldn't turn back on after dying. Any tips for diagnosis and a fix? Thanks!

Sorry for the wait I had to go out . Ok this is like a Malibu or Nova from around that year I think. The add on stereo stuff must have been over fused and now there will be hell to pay. Check with a light (test light) which glass fuses are or should be blown. If not the wiring was the fuse and then comes the headache. You or someone is going to have to look and the wires will have burned off the plastic insulation if overstressed. Let us know what you find and if you need to splice in wire do it right is my best advice, T
