87 Pathfinder, Starter won't disengage

87 Pathfinder has been sitting for about 6 months. Went to start it, installed battery, as soon as I hooked up the battery the starter engaged; the key was still in my pocket. Disconnected the battery, checked the ignition position using the key, made sure it was "off", reconnected the battery, the starter engages and won't stop until I disconnect the battery. I'm guessing that it is a relay, or maybe the ignition switch. Any ideas or actual knowledge would be helpful.

?-! How special. Guess I'd disconnect the trigger wire at the starter and reconnect battery and hunt down why it's enabled or has starter frozen in "start" mode. Trigger wire is the smaller wire that gets energized by the key. If any ad ons like remote start are on this that may be the trouble, T

Just a note........... If after disonnecting the wire that Tom refers to, if it still engages when the battery is connected, it would indicate the starter itself was bad. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Does this have a remote starting system installed? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thanks. I'll check it out tomorrow and post the results. I looked at the wiring diagram online and see that there is a relay between the ignition and the starter; is it possible that the relay has stuck in the hot position?

I don't know whether there is a remote; my guess would be no. How can one tell if there is a remote? Thanks for your interest.

Remote as in remote starter. Bet is if any would be aftermarket and lousy wiring job found to install it. If a relay to trigger wire was used and stuck I would think that could only happen after battery was installed on first start attempt not without messing with the key to start it with no battery at all? Just take a test light if need be and see if starter trigger wire is empowered as it would be with start request other wise starter may somehow have stuck/frozen in an engaged to crank engine position - reason unknown how it would do that from sitting?
