88 Jeep Wrangler

My Buddy is working on an 88 Jeep Wrangler, It has the straight 6 Carbureted engine in it with Manual Transmission. The issue he is having is the engine will stay running when you turn the ignition switch all the way over but the second you release the pressure off the key the engine will die. He has replaced the ignition switch with no results. He has also replaced the computer and still nothing. He jumped over the key switch and still has not solved the problem... Does anyone have any other thoughts on this problem so he can get this resolved?

With the ignition on, do you have battery voltage at the ignition coil?

Yes there is power at the coil.

just to be sure . there is 12v at the + side of coil with the key in the run position?

This doesn't make an sense. Has your friend removed the ignition switch from the column with the wiring still attached and manually used a pocket screwdriver or equivalent to slide the contact bar in the switch to start the engine? Maybe there is a problem with the linkage in the steering column?

The positive side of the coil had no power. I Think I have found the problem. The ignition control module. Found in the bottom of left fender under washer bottle. It looks like old ford brain box.I am installing a new one today. Cost about $120.00. I will let you know if this does fix the problem.thanks for the help.

That's a good way to throw away $120

Sounds like your testing was faulty because you said you had no power at the coil and that doesn't come from the Ignition module.

So, the coil had power and then it didn't have power.Crazy

Just curious. What made you replace the ignition module? How did you determine it was bad? Just to let you know the ignition module doesn't supply power to coil. The power for the coil comes from the ignition switch. The module controls the coil's ground to charge and fire the coil.
