I have a 1991 Pontiac Firebird, basic model, V6 engine with about 122,000 miles on it. I bought it about a year ago with absolutely no problems. One day about a month later, I drove it to a car show, and it was parked there for a good 3 hours. I went to go start the car to leave and the car would not even crank to turn on. It was completely dead. I got it towed to a car mechanic who had it for 6 months before he figured out that the car security system shut down the car for an unknown reason. He bypassed the system and disabled the security system. After that, it drove fine for about 2-3 weeks. I was driving it home at night and all of a sudden the lights started dimming and everything inside my car (lights, radio, turn signal, windshield wipers) would not work at all, then the car shut off on me as soon as I applied the brakes. I once again had my car towed to the same mechanic who replaced my alternator and battery. I got my car back, went to drive it home, and my car stalled again, this time only my engine stopped. All of my lights and accessories were still working. It stalled when I applied the brakes again. I took it back and he said it was a faulty alternator and that my computer system was just trying to "relearn" itself. He replaced the alternator once again, but this time he also replaced the EGR Valve, brake lines, and some fuel lines and it drove fine. About 3 months later, the car stalled again on me at a stop sign. This time when it got looked at, the wires were sparking and the engine compartment caught fire for a brief second. That burnt the wires leading to the battery and alternator. They replaced all of the burnt and grounding out wires. I went to drive it again today after I thought it had finally been fixed, and once again, it stalled out on me when I applied the brakes. We just replaced the alternator AGAIN and it still is stalling out as we try to test it (When we apply the brakes). So all together we have replaced the alternator 4 times, battery, EGR valve, brake lines, electrical wires, and fuel lines and we still are having the same reoccurring problem that no one can seem to figure out. HELP!Shocked

My gosh....took that long to troubleshoot a no crank problem? You sure that is a mechanic or a wanna be?

You really need to find another mechanic because he or she has no clue what the heck they are doing.
