I have a 97 Pontaic Grand Prix. It all begin a few days ago. The gauges on the dash started going crazy. The low fuel light came on, the battery light and the tach and speedometer went a little crazy, too. Then things got worse. All the above stuff happened and my running lights, inside and out, went out and then the motor stopped. I could let it cool down and it would run for a half hour or so. Then it stopped running at all. It would start but not stay running. My husband checked all the electrical connections. He replaced the main computer, but that didn't help. He also replaced the ignition module. Nothing seems to help. We've both looked on line and in service manuals and can't find anything to tell us what might be wrong with it. I hope someone has some ideal.

From the descriptions you gave it sounds like the Body Control Module may be suspect. You said that the PCM was replaced. If the vehicle has Passkey or Passlock (has a chip in the key) and you replace a module you need to do a relearn procedure. It is most likely as follows: 1) Turn ignition on (don't crank engine) for ten minutes. 2) Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. 3) Turn ignition on (don't crank engine) for ten minutes. 4) Repeat steps 2 and 3 for a total of 3 times (30 minutes for the modules to reprogram the Passcode from the key's chip). * When the passcode fails the engine will start for a few seconds then stall. The computer will shut the fuel injectors down. This is the theft-deterrent system activating. If you see the theft light flashing on the dash after the engine stalls you will need to perform the relearn procedure. Steve

Can you tell me where the body control module would be located on my Grand Prix?

It's under the dash to the left of the steering column. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I would strong suggest against blindly throwing a BCM at this problem. Make sure to check the basics out 1st. Get the battery tested to make sure you are working with a good battery with clean connections.... Then the no start needs to be addressed. Find out what is missing when it doesn't start. Spark or fuel? After that there is procedures to track this down...before putting anymore parts on it.... I hate to say it but what has already been spent would have more than paid for a tow & diagnosis of the original problem. If he has the tools & know how to diagnose the system, lets do that before spending any more money. If not it may be cheaper to at least get the problem diagnosed so you know what part has failed...

I want to thank everyone for there help. I've already check to make sure there is fuel and spark. The battery is good. I can't say its new but its got a good charge. I know someone that has a junk yard and a car that's like mine, it has a few parts left on it. The car was running good when it went to the yard, so I'm hoping the parts that I'm using are ok. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again.

You can't just throw a junkyard BCM into that car. They are programmed with the VIN and you are just asking for trouble.

I've took your advise and I've been waiting to save the money to get my car to someone that can tell me what is wrong with it. In the mean time, my husband has been tinkering with it. He has always thought that it was something to do with the ignition. He took the steering column cover off and checked some voltages going to the ignition. there were four wires that were coming out of a black box. Two end wires had 12 volts all the time(with key on or off). Second wire had only 3.5 volts all the time. Third wire had 12 volts with key on, no voltage with key off. He jumped the third wire to the second wire and the car runs great. Everything works. When he plugs in the diagnostic tool he has it says that there is nothing wrong with the car. He thinks there may be something wrong with the box that the wires from the ignition are plugged into. My problem is where not sure if thats it or what to call that box to check on the availabilities or cost. Can anyone help me?
