98 Buick LaSabre slow crank no crank

98 Buick LaSabre, 3.8 liter v-6, 160000 miles
Wife stopped to get gas. When she tried to start the car it cranked slowly like he battery was dead. Jump starting did not help. At one point she smelled hot wiring. Positive cable looks like it had gotten hot.
I bought a starter from he wrecking yard. 140 bucks just wasn't in the budget at the time. I installed it and the car did start. i heard what sounded like something rubbing so i turned it off. Decided to call it a night. A couple of days later when i tried again, it was back to acting as though the battery was dead. Bought another used starter and again same result.
I've had the battery charged and tested a couple of times
I've replaced the positive and ground leads.
I've had the alternator tested.
I've tried using a jumper wire across the solenoid terminals as well as from the battery to the solenoid.
Lastly I've bought another starter from the store, tested it there. Again had the battery tested. 84% after a load test. Still have not made any progress.
I'm stuck on this one. To make matters worse I've missed 3 days of work.
Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated.

If the battery cable is getting hot, then that only leaves a few possibilities.
1, Too much resistance in the battery cable
2, Starter drawing too much current
3, The engine is too tight for some reason, usually internal failure.

Ok. I removed 3 of the plugs and loosened up 1 other. Remaining 2 are a pain to get to.
I'm thinking that the engine is somehow bound up. I can hardly turn it over by hand using a socket on the bolt that goes into the crank shaft. How much effort should it take to turn it over by hand?

Using a two foot bar it should rotate rather easily, especially with the plugs out.

Thanks for your help. I've come to the conclusion that it's time to stick a fork in it. It's done. Some how, and I don't understand why, the engine has all but siezed up. I've put enough pressure on that bolt to almost shear it off and only been able to move it a couple degrees.
I understand that it had some miles on it. Up until this point this car ran great. Had regular maintenance done. Normally ran cool. Overheated only 2X in the last 10 yrs. Never smoked. Had a small drip from the oil pan. To me it doesn't make sense that it would suddenly sieze up. I always thought it would take some kind of event for that to happen. How common is this? What is actually siezing up? And lastly, is there a way to fix it without doing a complete overhaul?

Your first sentence pretty much sums up my answer.
No, it's not common for an engine to seize for no reason. There is always a reason and you have not found yours yet which is why there is no answer to the second part of your question. If you donb't know what happened, you certainly can't know what it's going to take to fix it. No, there is no shortcut rebuild, especially with that mileage. Your smartest move would be a good used engine.

Just want to mention this for what it's worth
I have had many seized up GM alternators that prevented the engine from turning over
For kicks and grins,
Remove the Serpentine Accessory drive belt and then see if the engine will turn over.
If it does, check all the accessories to see which is locked up.Most likely will be the alternator
I know you mentioned you had the alternator checked, not sure how that was done so I just figured I'd mention this.
Worth a try...

Oh my Double J. Forgot that and it sure can fool you over a seized up accessory! Easy enough to check as you said an totally possible.
Hope things are good for you please quit sending your weather this way now could use a break this go around,

You guys do get your share of the weather . I'll put in your request to refrain from sending weather that way. Don't get your hopes up. Chicago is all screwed up. Put a "T" between the i and c in Chicago and you'll know what we think of it here.

Ayup - the 'serp' belts can be that strong on a seized alternator?
Dang Winters. NBD really just that I have to do it and been about 3 record years of it so if you can just push the cold back up so it missed here would really appreciate it,

I guess I should be more vigilant about checking back on these things. I had not read the information that you added until now. Weeks later. The car has been parked tthe whole time. I've had it for sale for a couple of hundred bucks because shelling out the money to replace a engine or rebuild one isn't in my budget. But I can swing something such as a a.c. pump.
I will definitely have to check this out before I sell it. It's actually been a very reliable car. I can't imagine the engine suddenly locking up. It didn't overheat, the oil looks fine, and was running fine until it was shut off to get gas. I'll let you know after I check it out. Thanks.

Been a month and you have to check things like now why talking A/C compressor? Why? JUST REMOVE OR LOOSEN THE BELT SEE WHAT IS REALLY FROZEN. Some belts you can't take off without removing motor mount on pass. side just BTW.
Check things IS IN YOUR BUDGET I hope before declaring it needs an engine. 20-21 years and 160K lots of anything could happen by surprise so rule thing out not guess,
