1998 Jeep Cherokee, 6-cyl, 135000 miles. Intermittent starter problem. Usually starts fine. But often after sitting when I turn the key, starter whines but doesn't turn. When release the key it makes a clunking sound. Then when I turn the key again it starts normally. Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like a starter drive problem, but should check the flex-plate upon starter removal. Don't forget to check the basics...battery, connections, ect. Low voltage can cause all sorts of strange symptoms. Loren SW Washington
