Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

1994 Lincoln Town Car
4.6L, 111,000 Miles

Hey y'all.
So, when I bought my car it had three lights on the dash telling me that there were problems in need of correcting. One of 'em was the air bag light. The guy I bought it from told me that it's a bad ground wire, but this is the same guy who thought that the drivers side window didn't go all the way down because he'd lined up the track wrong when indeed it was a pair of bolts which were too long that were obstructing the path of the window.

I've searched far and wide this past week and a half to find any sort of information online about this problem, but if somebody could point me in the right direction and give me an instructional or something, that'd be dope.

On an related note, where can I find the best digital manual for working on this car for a fair price. I've heard that these are great cause I can print out the pages I need and throw them away without worrying about greasing up a physical book.

Thanks, guys.

You are going to need to get that code/s pulled for that air bag so we know what circuit is having the problems.

You're getting way out of your league now.

You need professional equipment to even access the codes and extensive knowledge to be able to diagnose a system like this.

I will pretty much guarantee this problem is not simply a ground wire. He just made that Sh!t up.

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

So i need to take it to a professional to get the codes for this one? I got the code for the egr valve channel from a KOER test, but this one needs professional diagnostic equipment? I suppose I'll need the same thing to find out which abs sensor is bad then?

I'm starting to figure out just how full of Sh!t this guy was. The car is in great condition for her age, but it's all these little things that I have to work on everywhere in the car to correct.

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

Again, you're oversimplifying things again.

There is a possibility that a speed sensor is causing an ABS problem but that is only one possibility. There are modules, wiring and solenoid systems that can have faults also. Get the codes and we may be able to help.

When you get into air bag and restraint systems you are delving deeply into the professional world. Even a lot of professionals aren't capable of diagnosing restraint systems accurately.

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

I was prepared to have to get a professional diagnostic at some point, so I suppose I'll check the funds and see about getting it done tomorrow while I'm getting the alignment redone. If I don't go the full 9, will an Advance Auto code reader do the trick? I know these shops keep the cables around for older models.

I'm sure to somebody on the other side of a forum conversation it might seem like I'm oversimplifying things, but I'm starting at the point of what the guy told me, using it as a reference point, and going from there on outward as I'm learning the intricacies of all these new systems that I get to work on. I'm enjoying all this so much I might take up working on project cars as a hobby. Or maybe I am oversimplifying things cause I growled at the rivets in the window the other day and that didn't make em come out any faster. :)

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

Clarify something for me.

We ARE talking about airbag restraint systems and not air suspension, right?

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

Air bag, not suspension. I am aware of the risks and safety measures required in handling an air bag so it doesn't blow up in my face, and i accept any consequences that come of it, just putting that out there.

No problem. Just wanted to make sure it was a an air suspension problem instead.

Things get lost in translation sometimes.

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

That's pretty much a bad air bag module.

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

So the control module needs to be replaced. Ok, I'm on it then.

"Short to ground", that's where the guy got the bad ground wire bit from.

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

That's going to require new, not used and programming.

You can check but I doubt there are any aftermarket available.

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

Can I ask where the control module is? I didn't see it behind the stereo when I replaced the car stereo. I'm just asking before I start removing the dash so that I know exactly where to find it.

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

It's behind the right side of the dash, accessed through the glove box.

Re: Air bag Light - Town Car Sign In

Awesome. I already laid eyes on it. I'm done with auto work for today, so I'll start on that tomorrow, bright and early.

Thanks
