Hey guys!
But of a tricky one.
Noticed my cooling fans weren't coming on when car was up to temperature but would when I turned the a/c on. I assumed it was the coolant temperature sensor. So I ran around with the a/c on until the part arrived which shortly after the fans stopped running altogether even with a/c on. They only work when I unplug the coolant temp sensor.
Changed the sensor, the relay and fuse , the fan control module and the fans still won't work unless unplugged.
My aircon is currently out of gas which happened a while ago , booked in to be fixed this week could that be related?
Any thoughts guys ???

Hi back at you. 1st, why do you think A/C is low on refrigerant other than maybe some light? I don't think that trick will work it this defaulted to shut down compressor while engaged (it wont if charge way too low) then forces fan for it to come on. Fan(s) may wait for need for them sensing high pressure in A/C system so that trick may not force fan(s) anymore.
With that have to ask if this is warmed up but not overheating fans wouldn't come on for engine cooling so it may be normal now?
It's always great to watch engine temp many will fluctuate and not overheat but be stable with vehicle speed and natural airflow should stay about at the same spot. It's slowing down after moving along or stopped will trigger fan(s) to engage.

For sure do anything not to really overheat for real is real trouble. So far I'm not sure there's a real problem.
Tis the warmer season perhaps you are now with open windows and notice the fans if colder out probably don't?
This should have codes saying things are out of spec for A/C and default to just cooling engine as it should. If not really overheating probably best not to go replacing things when or if not certain there's a problem at all and don't think there is other than A/C isn't working,

A/c only blew warm air so I took it into the shop and the found a leak in on of the hoses using a die. So all the refrigerant leaked out!
Right! So what your saying once a/c is fixed the fan trick might work again ?
Even after 30 mins of driving and I pull up into traffic the fans still wont kick in etc. In was warned it could cause some serious damage if I didn't fix the issue so that's why I'm being proactive by replacing parts!

OK - Hopefully A/C will just be fix the leak is the most common initial issue with that. This and many vehicles don't even want to waste the electricity of fans if not needed and I'm not sure you do yet. No question it leaves you wondering especially if you totally know what to expect when in that exact car.
It's true, if all wrong and you overheat you could wipe out this engine no problem to worthy to pay attention. What to do if it's real? Put heat on full blast is probably about it if you are convinced it's not within norm ranges just get it stable that's an emergency to fix.
I totally think if A/C detects low pressures = the low charge in system of that compressor will cease to try again which triggers fan for that.
While on that look right at this car not all uniform on this. That fan may only be useful for A/C cooling the condenser for A/C not much or any help for the engine - varies by each vehicle how it's layed out.

Yes - that "trick" worked but not so much even older than this - assorted cars, options not uniform for this to all.

Best part here is your paying attention probably this or another time save a whole engine. Good for you! Most folks are clueless (I'm bad) what the heck is going on.
Suggestion to anyone. As vehicles get some age and miles time to quit depending on automatic warnings of some fault. Check your own fluid levels, tire pressure include the spare always flat on road call for me. Low oil or low oil pressure? Know which is which one is fatal. Same with temps at some point it's real and not normal sometimes it's just at limits of normal.
Keep watch as you are if in doubt ask. BTW this site isn't live just when a tech can check in so get faster help if needed,
