Battery Is Not Charging

1996 Izusu Hombre 2.2L SFI 4cyl 230k miles The alternator is not charging the battery. I installed a new battery about a month ago. Also installed a new alternator and starter about 2 months ago. Today I checked the fuses in the box and they are all good. I think the problem started about 6 months ago when I adjusted the headlights and had to jump start the truck. I am not sure if I did damage somewhere else and need help/advise. I took the battery in today for a recharge, so I might have another month before I need to fix the problem. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have a volt meter? With the engine running what is the voltage reading you get at the battery terminals? Is the charging light on? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

It's doing something if you can charge the battery and go a MONTH! If it wasn't getting something it might only last an hour on a good well charged battery not a month. Your alternator is doing something but not enough and new or not needs to be tested, T

Thanks. I hope it is the alternator. That is an easy fix. I will get it tested tomorrow.

You can get a cheapo voltmeter at AZ that even just plugs into a power port or a cheapo multimeter at Wallyworld for perhaps $12 bucks. Bet it reads OK but so much as turn headlights on or much of anything and it probably will fall below norms. Normal voltage should stay at about 13.5 to 14.5 with engine running and if it can't stay in that range something is wrong. Let us know what you find. DS and I hit this thread in the same nano-second by chance, T

Test the alternator on the vehicle. If you remove the alternator and have it bench tested, it might work fine on the bench, but if you have some sort of wiring issue, it won't work on the vehicle. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Guys, thanks a lot. I thought I had this solved some time ago and I have been frustrated watching the battery gage on the dash go down. I will do both... Who doesn't want a new tool?

Thanks again. I did not buy the tool. I did find out that the alternator was no good. Thankfully it was under warrantee. That was probably the problem all along. Oh well, installed a new (better) battery and a new starter.

What works works and glad you are all set but sorry it cost you the starter anyway. IMO the battery isn't a waste if it had any age on it. I used to and still will on some just toss them by 4 years old as the dependability drops off sharply even though some go much longer, T
