Bizarre key fob problem Sign In

My GF has a 2003 VW Beetle. It has the oddest problem I've ever seen, although I personally haven't had many car problems.

Here's the problem: About 1/4th of the time, the fob will not unlock the doors. When this happens, the car will not start. I don't even hear a click at all. I changed the battery in the fob but no luck.

Here's where it gets really weird to me. When this happens, all you have to do is hook up jumper cables to another vehicle and it will start right up. Then it will be OK for 3 to 5 more starts.

I know next to nothing about cars, especially the electronics. but it makes no sense to me that jumping the car could somehow reset the fob.

Any idea would be greatly appreciated as VW wants $100 to diagnose and if it needs a new fob, that will be an additional $125 to $190

Thanks.

This is no big mystery and it has nothing to do with the fob.

You clearly had a dead battery. Now you need to find the reason why. Start off by having the battery tested and then the charging system.

If both check out, then you have to test for a parasitic draw on the system when parked.

Same! That or U-bolt type bands for battery connection are seriously not making a connection well? If cold and this battery is over 4 years old I wouldn't even test it, just go for new if you need and want to use the car,
