Blown Fan Fuse Sign In

I recently replaced the radiator fan and pigtail going to it on my 98 Mustang Cobra. I then noticed the fuse was blown and when I tried to replace it, it immediately blew the new one. Any ideas of what to do to find the short?

You'll need a fan circuit wiring diagram and either a 12 volt test lamp and/or DVOM.

I do have a volt meter, should I just test the female ends on the pigtail?

Sounds like you may have wired that pigtail wrong.

Matching up the old pigtail correctly in the first place.

Does it blow the fuse in the fan is unplugged?
Did it do this before you wired it?

Just two cents and the question. Did this new pigtail come color matched or some aftermarket deal where all wires the same color? If so you have to pay strict attention,

No, they come with all white wires.

Lost one that was on my kitchen counter by Echlin for a headlight - not the point but all wires are black and OE all other colors? Not installed yet because it looks cheap to me compared to the original still workable,

Well when I first cut off the old pigtail I made sure to install the new one matching the same wires so I dont think thats the problem. Furthermore, I was able to get the fan running after installing yet another fuse which lasted all of about a day before being blown. Still having trouble trying to locate a short.

Will this fan spin and coast - use a stick or something all things off keys out? If it's real tight motor COULD be the trouble drawing too much current?

Now you are describing what simply sounds like a bad motor drawing too much current if it's lasting that long. There could be something else tapped into the circuit also.

Was just a wild thought. May not misbehave and be inconclusive. What happened to the original pigtail? Was it all burned from too much heat? You got a day out of a fuse so if this is going to be intermittent I'm looking for "bread crumb" clues as to why? Motor alone may or may not be available separately if and I repeat IF it's deemed drawing too much current,

Well I bought a brand new fan so I'm hoping thats not the case though I do realize it is a possibility. I may try swapping it out with the previous one I had and seeing if it works with that one, I cant remember if the fuse was blowing out with the previous fan or not.

Well the reason I replaced the pigtail and fan assembly in the first place was because I had noticed on the pigtail one of the female ends was damaged, looked kind of burnt. I then noticed after I had replaced the pigtail that the matching male end on the fan motor was loose and when I plugged the pigtail in that it would actually push that male end back toward the motor. I was able to get the pigtail plugged in correctly but first had to pull that male end extremely tight with some needle noses. That way it wasnt being pushed toward the motor. This did not however solve my problem as the fan was still not coming on but I am unsure if the fuse was still intake at that point. I decided to replace the fan assembly then.

What's the location number of the fuse and which box is it in?


I cant remember what the number was off the top of my head but its in the fuse box under the hood next to the battery. I can say that it is the top most fuse and in the manual it is the fuse for the fan.
