I have a 2002 Grand Am. When I turn the key, absolutely nothing happens. The battery is good (the headlights, alarm, etc all work). I put a volt meter on the fuse for the ignition circuit, and it reads about 12.5 volts. The voltage doesn't dip at all when the key is turned. My thinking is that it is unlikely to be the starter, because if it was being energized, I would hear a click and see a dip in voltage. I don't know if this is relevant at all, but in the past couple of weeks, while the car was running, the ABS, Traction Control, and Check Engine lights all went on at the same time. When I turn the car off and back on later, the lights would not be on, but would come back on a day or two later while driving.

I guess for the moment see if the trigger wires is empowered by "start" request. Yes it could be a solenoid or starter or several things but that would be a good place to begin, T

have your codes read as soon as you get it started also, although the lights may not be on, they have stored codes and could posisbly hint to other problems. as for the traction and brake light, you will have to pay a shop for those, autozone and advanced and places alike can only read basic engine codes. id take it to a shop and pay for the diagnostic troubles. I figured out the problem. It was the Passlock Security system. The temporary solution, based on the owners manual, was to leave the key in the On position for 10 minutes until the security light went off, then turn the key to the off position, wait a few seconds, and I was able to start it. There is still something faulty with the security system, but it starts without a problem about 95% of the time.

So, you should have had a flashing security light when you tried to star it that you forgot to tell us about. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
