My G20 work van will not crank over or start. I replaced the starter a week ago due to it becoming more and more difficult to start. That turned out not to be the problem. At first it seemed to work better then it returned to harder to start mode, especially in the cold morning. Then today I went to start it and nothing but one. click coming from under the dash. I thought it was my battery then but having it checked at a battery store it was good. I cleaned the posts and the negative cable connection to to the block, nothing. I think it sounds like the starter relay is bad due to the clicking sound when turning the key but not sure. Its a Chevy G20 conversion van with 165000 miles , 1993, 5.7, Auto. Looking for some knowledge of what should I do next? Thank You.

There is no relay in this circuit. It is a very basic circuit. The ignition switch supplies trigger power directly to the starter and the starter gets it's power directly from the battery cable so one of them is falling short. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

So that would direct me to checking the ignition switch having already eliminated the battery as the problem then. The clicking noise coming from the area around the upper dashboard area when I turn the key is not coming from the ignition switch but from another component, is that not an issue? Thank you for your response.

It's not an issue for the starter. It may be for something else. It's most likely just the ignition lock out solenoid energizing. An easier way to test for switch is to run a direct jumper wire from the starter trigger wire to the battery positive terminal to test the starter. Not hard wired, just momentary to see if the starter cranks.

Can I run a separate temporary wire that connects to the solenoid and touch the other end to the battery without taking the trigger wire off of the solenoid?

or do you mean to just jump it right from the small post on the solenoid to the positive post on the starter?

Do everything Hammer said this thread got long, fast. Just another spot that can do this happened to small block Chevs for ages? IDK why but a bolt holding eyelet of main ground wire wasn't tight enough (new stuff) or can be untouched for all these years. Look for it. Did a lot of road calls once this "one click" stuff. Fix on the spot just tug on that one it started and quick fix it if possible or say what needed fixing that is universally neglected for most all, T
