Cruse Control on 97 GMC Sierra

This has been a great truck (2WD, 5Ltr engine, auto), until recently the cruse worked well. Lately it will sometimes activate and other times not. No obvious reason. What do I check first? I've been spoiled by autopilot. Thanks in advance.

Hard to check but a defective brake light switch may be doing this. Cruise shuts down when brakes are applied and many use the brake lights being on for this action.
I own a similiar vehicle and can't see my brake lights unless it's dark backing up to something to reflect the light. Could be the switch in the directional lever but as it's intermittent it's going to be like fixing Chistmas lights. Let us know what you find. T
