Directional Signals acting up

Hi Folks, I have a '99 Jeep Cherokee. Today, the directional signals started to give me problems. When trying to signal (right or left; they're both affected.) the light will blink once or twice then cut out. Many times they won't blink at all. The same bulbs work perfectly fine when I turn on the hazzard blinkers. I'm guessing it's not a fuse, 'cause they'd not work at all in that case, right? Likely some kind of short? Ugh. Is there some method of self repair I can try first rather than an expensive trip to the shop?
