Engine won’t shut off with key! Sign In

Hello all, I’ve been stumped by this issue for awhile now. When the key is turned off and removed the engine continues to run. I have 3 relays, a main relay, a fuel pump relay, and a fan relay. When the motor is running and the key is out my alternator light stays on, my tach loses power and the ignition wire reads 3 volts at 85 0n the main relay. A friend told me that he thought if I used an old school testing light and touched it to 85 on the main relay it would kill the motor and it did! He said if it did that the relay was probably too big and that it needed to be smaller. Is that true? I would think if a 12v relay loses 12v it would shut off no matter what amperage it was? Thanks, signed confused

71vwfbk : Sport, what is this thing? User name suggests a VW if 1971 wouldn't have an electric fuel pump involved or for fuel anything.
Sound from the crudest basics if removing a key that was in the OFF position and it still ran the problems is there or close to that lock cylinder, worn parts of unknown age or much of anything. State what the vehicle, model year and engine is or this isn't going anywhere,

Sorry about that Tom. The car is a 71 VW Fastback that now has a Subaru EJ25 parked in it and is controlled by a Microsquirt V3 ECU. The engine runs and idles and I’ve had it out on the road but it won’t shutoff with the key as stated in my opening post. I purchased the electrical portion (NOS) of the the ignition but didn’t want to dig into the column until I was absolutely sure that was the problem. Other than bypassing the voltage regulator for the alternator, adding the ECU and above mentioned relays/fuses, a tachometer (which loses power when the key is turned off) and a coolant temp gauge, the cars wiring is factory. Thanks for your help Tom!

OK, so it's a "Frankenstein" VW with "NOS" = new old stock VW ignition?
Can you get to the back of this ignition and see/test wires right there? I just can't know VW made cars/vehicles for each destination's requirements I actually forgot when a locking steering wheel was mandated for use in the US and probably Canada? Was close to then would have used a remote rod to the actual ignition switch the key would just be a lock cylinder so you have to say which?

OE was always with points not thru electronic controls rather would use a ballast resistor OE but not for while "cranking" starter just for when you let go it switched. I don't know how you got all this in order that resistor was to lower voltage almost all wasted electricity to do so no matter who made it. Points didn't want 12V set ups but did for starting - follow me?

If that switch is on the key cylinder's back side it would be marked I think. Lots of guessing if so it's stuck sending voltage to power it OE stuff of the whole era parts inside actually touched and let go like some relays still do if you bust one open.

There's the likely problem spot or 1st cause. If it really does lower voltage thru a "ballast" it's stuck.

Wild guess if hidden that item would be seriously hot to the touch now and welded itself inside IDK try whacking the thing with a love tap it might snap out of that mode or not.

Trying for you but there's just so many differences in plain point ignitions AFTER 12V vehicles became common (once 6V) vs electronic I too would be on this goose chase why power stays on with key turned to OFF and key OUT allowed. OMG, some you could take keys out with it running so you could unlock other things adds to the maybe list!

Wish you luck I'm just reporting what things were done I do recall the VW new not many "Fastbacks" were around the Bug and Bus were a little more common.

BTW I'm in and live in cold country for Winters VWs all air cooled, engines in the back couldn't heat for crap to defrost real ice off windows but did have remarkable traction with engine over drive wheels for what they were - cheap things vs other vehicles for a legal vehicle here!

Tom is right about one thing for sure. This is a Frankenstein disaster.

It is likely an electrical nightmare. I'm sure this problem is rooted in some rigged wiring that is feeding back into the ignition system but you surely are not going to find the solution on the Internet. Nobody that wasn't part of designing this will have any idea what has been done in these circuits, nor will anyone knowledgeable have any interest in getting involved in this mess.

I've seen the subaru swap to bugs. Anyway call me nuts but an ecu tied into a switch that has no idea what it is. Sounds like the ecu takes over keeps the engine running after it is started taking the switch out of the equation.
I had a '68 I bagaed. I got an porch engine, years ago, that had fuel injection and a brain. I didn't want to mess with it so I I found a guy that built racing bug engines and he helped me set up 2 Holley/Weber 5200's on individual runners. Thing ran wicked.
