Falling into a nightmare of fixing a second hand car Sign In

I have a 2005 Honda CRV which I purchased from my relative few years ago.
It was running fine the first 6 months and it has 260k plus mileage now.
I only added 10k plus mileage on this car because I didn't drove as much.
I replaced the alternator within the first year.
I had to park the car on the driveway during this pandemic. The body still look OK but underneath is rusting.
In the past 4 months, I had the breaks serviced and replaced upstream and downstream oxygen sensors. But the engine light continue to lit up. I took the car to a mechanic and he found out that the fuel vent needed to be fix. After that the engine light still lit and he said that I need to change the canister. I already invested $2500 so far into fixing this car. Replacing the canister will be another $400 plus. But my worst nightmare is yet to come, I just found out that my car won't start up today, No crank, no power, no head light and no sound. Same thing after I charged the battery.
I really don't know what to do. Because the car should only worth $2500 to $3000 if it is running fine. I believe I will have to pay another $1000 just to get this car running again. But it will bring the cost up to $3500 or more. But I won't be able to sell it for more than $3000. I must get rid of this car within a month. I cannot afford to keep this car anymore.
What should I do?

Larry - this one of a zillion "pandemic" issues/nightmares as I see it. Cars-vehicles just can't sit around! Hard to help that too.

Battery will just croak for lack of use so will brakes develop rust or spot where they sat too long easier to redo than fix that.

IDK - try to get a good used battery (some around me never tried) and charge it. Nothing is going to happen till this starts.

Sensors? They may not have needed replacing? It sat too long in adverse conditions more likely but IDK, not there seeing it.

The other is these can do those miles but you nor buyers should be thrilled at over 1/4 million miles and still pay for the thing! Some will and do well some have needs exceeding any possible value!

Things to own and do for sitting cars with this scene is and was always useful and helpful:

Drive the things! Drag brakes to clean them off from gun rust.
Leave a battery maintainer on them if not used every other day or so.
Check tires they don't like sitting so move it and keep pressure up so move it if only in a spot turn it around.

Stinks but change oil on just low use cars if you did all that.

If you didn't what happens is about like you said, lots of costs exceeding car's value decide what to do cut losses or add to them to get rid of it.

BTW: This happens to brand new cars/trucks (1+ years) unsold go too long need tons of work with no miles on them get dumped for recycling and car makers seem to hide that info!

Thank you so much for replying to me.
The problem is that I can't get it to start now. It still run last week.
Doesn't seems like there are problems with the fuse but I will try to find out.

That's really not a practical approach. ALL cars have an operating cost whether it be depreciation in value that gets lost in payments or maintenance costs to keep it operating. Unless you are purchasing a brand new vehicle where the depreciation really kicks in, you will have maintenance costs to deal with. You could buy another used vehicle and be in worse shape than you are now.

Yes, the mileage is extremely high and that factor may be the one that matters most in this one but the issues you should be watching for is the condition of the engine and transmission or other major investments. Check engine lights and various sensors and components are going to show up on most any used vehicle and could be even worse in the next one.

The bottom line is, don't expect to get everything that you put into it back out of it as there is always going to be a cost to operate a used car in lieu of payment/depreciation on a new one.

To try to help you with your current problem here is the wiring diagram for the starter circuit. We can try to answer any questions you have about it but someone is going to have to follow it to resolve your problem.

Yes, there are a couple a very large fuses in the circuit that could be bad but it would have taken a pretty severe overload to blow fuses that large.

Other areas of concern are the relay and the range sensor correctly signaling Park. Try moving it to neutral assuming it's an auto trans.

All of this is defendant on a good battery so that is where you have to start. The battery needs to be charged and tested before looking anywhere else.
