Hello!
I have a Ford Econoline 250, 1979, 5,8 with two parallel-connected batteries. I took the batteries off to charge them (using a smart charger so it is not overcharged). When I am putting them back to the van and connecting them back the same way as it originally was, after connecting the last negative terminal, it starts sparking, smoking and can see some melting of random metal pieces close to the battery.
I have no idea why is this happening. The cables are not reversed polarity, I follow the steps properly - connecting red to another red, after black that is wired to the car skeleton and the last the jumper black to the other battery. The last step is where's the problem happening.
Any ideas why?

Apparently they were not connected correctly. That's the only reason that would happen unless the cable ends are touching the body somewhere..

Ditto mostly, you did something wrong or cables just rubbing or not right somehow.
My real question is do you really need or want TWO headaches with this dual battery set up for this? You should be able to do just fine with a strong single battery now anytime using two if they don't match they tend to kill each other unless totally identical, type age and all,

Red to Red is not as important as making sure you connect Positive to positive and negative to negative. It's not unusual to have a black cable on the positive side or a red cable for the negative side.
