Ford F150 Brake Light Issue Sign In

1999
Ford
F150 (4-door/4x4)
5.4L Engine
115,000 miles

I am having a brake light problem with the vehicle described above. The bottom line is that the rear brake lights do not work...the brake light on the rear (top) of the cab works...but the left and right rear brake lights do not.

I've checked the fuse and bulbs; all are serviceable. I had to replace the switch on the brake peddle about 4-5 months ago (all brake lights were not working before replacing it) with no issues until now. Is it possible for the brake switch to send power to the cab brake light and not the rear brake lights?

All other tail light functions work (hazards, turn signals, tail lights).

Any ideas?

You likely have a bad combination switch in the steering column. The 2 lower lights pass through the turn signal switch so the turn signals can cancel the brake lights when necessary.

Thank you for the input. I finally found a wiring diagram shortly after I submitted the original post and saw exactly what you described. When I opened up the steering column to get to the switch, I found that the electrical connector on the back of the switch was very brittle and was allowing the wires to back out of wiring harness. I believe I have it temporarily secured until I can get a new connector/pigtail ordered.

Thanks again!

Good, that was easy.
