Ignition trouble Sign In

1977 Chevy Custom Deluxe 5.7...

The points are wearing out quickly (a few miles) and the engine will not stay timed. I have set the point gap, dwell and used a timing light (with new point of course) but the truck will not run smoothly for more than a few minutes. Is there a wiring schematic available for my truck? I suspect a wiring problem. Or any other advice?

? All true GMs started with HEI (high energy ignition) which was electronic without points, condenser etc in model year 1975. If this was switched to point style distributor and won't hold the right dwell or a .30 gap that suggests distributor bushings are too far worn out of spec.

Dunno how easy but HEI was better. If points a "Unitset" was available and you could get dwell right on the money with engine running thru a little door to an Allen screw. When RPMs raised up a bit is dwell changes more than 5 degrees suggests worn shaft bushings.

If a distributor now with points does it use a vacuum advance or not? If altered no wiring schematic would be just out there as nobody could guess how it was done with what color wiring,

If somebody converted this back to a point system, then the car likely doesn't have the resister wire for coil feed.

Hammer is correct .If you want to continue running points you are going to have to run a dropping resistor or resistor wire . Point style ign run 12 volts while cranking and then drop to 6 volts when running. That is why you are burning points up.
