Hey guys, Thanks in advance for any insight you might have. So my 03 tribute with 452000km on the engine has decided over the last few months that when it's raining or has rained or when the humidex levels are higher (i live between. 2 of the great lakes and Niagara falls so it's a common thing here. ) that it would misfire on cyl 6... After it warms up however it runs like a champ until the next moisture inducing event... I've been broke and had to fix other things on her so i hadn't gotten around to addressing that plus figured by the time i get to my mechanic a half hour highway drive away... the problem will always be absent anyway.. Today omw to work i decided to pop the hood and see what i could see, and upon touching the coil pack plastic casing of the one i seem to remember being cyl 6... I got a series of small electric shocks as it was firing... which did not happen while touching the other 2 front facing ones. So my question to you my fellow junkies is. Does that indicate a bad coil pack or a bad spark plug? Or is it maybe the wiring which considering it's age looks okay at first glance..? Or could it be something I'm not thinking of even? Again, many thanks to any and all of who can deliver the slightest bit of insight, i very much appreciate all of it. Merry Christmas and happy new year to all!! John

Yeah, that does sound like a bad, leaky coil pack. Don't be surprised if others act up in the not too distant future. I usually recommend changing them all at once. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

You can prove that's the fault area with tap water and a spray bottle helps if you add some salt to water if too clean it wouldn't work. Right away it would fail again that high voltage could or would show stray spark if dark also, T

In Reply To Yeah, that does sound like a bad, leaky coil pack. Don't be surprised if others act up in the not too distant future. I usually recommend changing them all at once. it seems like my reply from yesterday didn't go through... i had said something along the lines of : Yea i remember the lady from whom i bought the car saying she's changed one or 2 of them and i remember when my friend had coil pack problems they basically failed one after the other. Thank you for the advice, one other quick question is. Do you guys know if they come with new bolts by chance? The ones on there right now seem pretty rusty im a bit afraid they might break when i try to remove them... is it safe to soak them in liquid wrench? Given its electrical stuff... :/ Thanks again guys i love this forum

Thanks for all the advice guys. I know this is a different question, maybe i should start a new thread?... I was wondering what your thoughts on ceramic headlight connectors VS a high temperature rated plastic one such as Mine have melted and i need to replace them :/ lol

Thanks for the advice Tom. I did not install the burnt sockets... i bought the car used and it was 18 years old already... it runs well for the most part I'm just trying to give it some love... hence why i ask for advice before i go and wreck things.... fyi i don't believe the sockets are the originals given the amount of tape i found on the wiring... again... hence why i asked for advice from ppl who know what they're doing... thanks.

If you have to replace the sockets anyway, using high temp replacements isn't a problem. That would be fine. I'm going to delete you link for that as they are not allowed here.

My bad thank you very much. Would you say they're better than the ceramic ones then?

I have no opinion on that. I have never done what you are proposing. All I can say is that if they are claiming they were designed to resist higher temps, I guess you have to believe they will work. Overheating a connector doesn't happen overnight. It's a long term failure.

Back: High voltage (40,000 > 60,000 watts, will stray to points of least resistance. OE knew that OMG been over 100 years to know that. Find it or where. Tossing things is a very last choice imo - GOOD LUCK I find this stuff with window spray almost always find it. IF NOT IT'S a pest, Tom

Trying for you JOHN! Just re-read this has had other coil packs once sold whole for all or just ones you need IDK ever car and model out there. They put the dang things where water (road spray) hits them is/was a reason for failure. Said back many posts - spray them when working properly with I use window cleaner it will cause the failure right in front of you. If you have a garage can make it dark it will spark, stray spark you'd see it. Not rocket science it's high voltage can jump 1/4" so that item doesn't work, Tom
