Sign In When I put the key in my 1998 Mercedes C280, you cannot hear the steering wheel lock engage or disengage. The steering wheel is always in the unlocked position. This started to happen a few weeks ago, but the car still could be started. Now the key intermittantly cannot even be turned. It does this with both my keys. The Mercedes dealer checked with their computer and all the signals appear to be there from the EIS and the steering wheel lock. They want to charge me around $800 for a new Electronic Ignition Switch, and around $200 for a new Steering Wheel Lock. PLUS LABOR!!!!!!!!! Please help! Sign In I'm a little confused here on exactly what type of help you are looking for?? From your post it seem that you already know what the fix is for the problem you are having. If pricing is the issue, about all I could suggest would be to call around to some other shops that work on Benz's, I would just be careful to be sure they are qualified to do the job or it could wind up costing you way more than this original quote.... They said that the EIS is sending and receiving all the proper signals, and the Steering Wheel lock is also sending and receiving all the correct signals. The dealer is not sure what exactly is causing the problem.
