Moped ignition is cursed. Sign In

Trying to be as brief as possible. SSR Lazer 5 moped. Damn thing starts and runs like a champ in the early morning, but only for about 10 to 20 minutes. There’s always an unpredictable moment when it has a sudden and near total loss of power and I have to limp it back home at about 2 or 3 miles an hour. After that it’s just dead for the rest of the day.
I have replaced the battery, the ignition coil, the CDI, the voltage regulator, the magneto. All the components are generic and I have traced every single wire the bike has from one end to the other. That’s all the electronic components there are.
Anybody know a good exorcist in the Los Angeles area?

Mopeds aren't really our thing. I have no idea how the system is set up but my first suspect might be fuel.

It should be except the carburetor and air filter are brand new. I tried choking it up and that didn't do any good. Also, I figure if it was the carb then it would not be so temperature dependent.
Thanx

Late to this, sorry. IDK if the fuel you even can buy is right for this? Stinks but where I am, MA, other coast assorted small engines don't run for crap on "gas station" fuel.

I can't know what choices you have here Home Depot (others too) sell pure fuel, quart cans, 92 octane but the cost is breathtaking! Ya, like $40 bucks a gallon or close!

Well the most mysterious part is the intermittent, temperature dependent nature of the problem. That narrows the question down considerably. Factors like fuel, mixture, timing, compression, etc, can't account for it.
Thanx

Why are you so sure it's temperature?

It could just as easily be elapsed time, using up a reserve of fuel.

Well it does run much farther in the morning, and much farther on the first test of the day. It's quite consistent that way, if the first test of the day is in the am, it goes way further than if it's in the pm.
In fact, it did have a fuel problem when I first got it. The float valve was off. It would run fine for 30 seconds and then die. A couple of adjustments took care of that. But I still ended up replacing the carb, fuel line, and filter.
And now this. I can't win.
