So there so Ive been having some ignition issues with my 69 Falcon. To rule out a short somewhere I disconnected everything, sanded the cable ends, washers, nuts, and any other surface needs to be corrosion free. I replaced the super old looking weaved ground that ran from the starter to the frame, and I replaced the ground from the negative post to the engine block. Now when I hook everything back up and go to connect the positive cable I get lots of sparks. Really strong sparks. I've tried disconnecting the alternator and starter one at a time to see if there might be an issue there but i get sparks with either disconnected.
I replaced cables and cleaned everything up because previously when I'd turn the key I just get one click from the solenoid. Lights and all that work, but engine wouldnt turn.
No idea why I'm all of a sudden getting these sparks.
Any help super appreciated!

? You shouldn't need a "ground strap" from starter to "unit body" metal which this should be. It may be touching something positive if you observed spark hooking up battery?
You could add a new one or use that one from engine to body metal and that is done throughout the car.

Note: Single click from a solenoid is indicative of not enough AMPS delivered to starter motor or an adequate ground back to battery. Clean looking does NOT mean a good connection or that the wire inside is in fact good. Other reason for single strong click at solenoid is engine is too hard to turn for other possible reasons to be found,

I would disagree. That is the main body ground and very necessary. The engine is mounted in rubber and that is the only way body electrical gets a good ground back to the battery. Just make sure it is not connected to or touching the power stud of the starter. It should go from the block to the frame.
Most newer cars have multiple leads coming off the battery and one usually goes to the frame. This car relies on the ground coming from the engine.

If you are getting heavy arcing when the battery cable is hooked up, then something is drawing current or possibly wired wrong.

You have 2 threads going on the same problem so I'm closing this one now.
