Possible Wiring problem? Sign In

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt, have had it for 1.5yrs, and only has around 18k miles on it.

However I think i may have some loose wiring of sorts, but im not sure. Basically ever since winter started and it got cold out, my turn signal stopped making the clicking noise it makes when its on to let you know that they are on. This isnt the biggest deal to me but for some reason when that doesnt work my front left speaker inside my drivers door also does not work. When this first started happening, it would eventually go back to normal once the car heated up a bit, but that hasnt happened in awhile.

What may be the problem? Is this something i could fix pretty easily myself, or something you would recommend have someone look at (requires replacement parts/removing dashboard covers/ etc.).

Thanks for any help you may provide. Im hoping its just some loose wires, and can be an easy fix, but this doesnt seem like a usual problem.

Hey Palmer,

You haven't gone unnoticed but I don't have a clue how a speaker and directionals have a relationship?? There are others watching too and we see you but bet like myself at a loss of what to suggest but I'll try something here.

Does this car by any chance have a directional light in side view mirror or on door? If so that could be a link.

The noise a flasher makes isn't so much intentional but the actual noise of contacts touching then releasing. Some vehicles purposely make a tone (some Buicks I've known) if a directional is on too long as a reminder.

You might try a new flasher if you are willing to risk what should be a cheap part. Can't say for sure but most vehicle use two but not all. One for hazards and one for directionals. Of course they put them in sometimes odd places so know which one if there are two you are dealing with by sound which is a problem if it doesn't make any when looking! If you find a flasher and not sure which one, take it out and see what doesn't work - you'll know it the right one or not.

If there's any common denominator in directionals and a door speaker the door would have to have a light involved and if so some will have issues where wires bend at door jam.

The two things happening in sync with each other is baffling me for now??

Thank You for the response! However, there is no light on the door that blinks or one on the side view mirror. Maybe both the clicking noise and speaker not working is a coincidence, but the times where it went back to normal, both the clicking noise and speaker went back to working and would fade in and out occasionally. And this is without me really doing anything.

Im kind of at a loss at where I can go from here to better diagnose the problem. Whether it is to tell if there is a lose wire in the door that goes to the speaker, or another problem. My turn signals still work and the arrows that appear next to my speedometer still light up when the lights are on, along with my hazards. But no clicking noise, and of course no front left speaker.

I may just wait till the weather warms up before i end up going into possible parts replacement if we cant figure it out before then. To make sure its not the coldness that seems to have set this off.

Thanks for any help you may provide

Lookie what I found out there! They make an extra loud flasher for this! Gotta find it though as I don't know where exactly it is - usually at either fuse box inside or where you need a two year old to reach it under dash!

Here was AutoZone showed (no connection to this site) - just handy for pics of parts............You may need to ask at a counter as web sites for parts make mistakes. Sometimes if two flashers used they are the same item and part # -- Don't alter that.
Blazer/11-15 Volts 2 terminal 2 to 3 lamps for turn signal / 2 to 8 lamps for hazard warning extra loud thermal Bi-Metal variable load flasher Part Number:
FL577 Price: $8.99
~~~~~~~~~~~~ For that price I would try it just because. The relationship of speaker to a flasher may be a common ground as door shouldn't/doesn't rely on hinge to ground to body and speaker may use some form of grounding shared with directionals to dash metal - near the only common thing I can think of. I have to speak in general automotive terms as this is too new for me to have any hands on experience with the model. It still somewhat baffling as if a great loss of gound contact I would think other things would be involved too. Adding ground to ground is ok. Body metal should be all ground and anything bolted to it like dash, doors need ground as much as power to operate. Not sure why temperature seems to regularly trigger this either?? I'll have to check out a noisy flasher just for fun myself. I'm getting to be the old phart who leaves it on too long with turns that don't trigger the cancel feature with a slight turn, LOL, T
