Sable 97 does not start

Suddenly I could not start the car. I found out that no P12 volt arrive on the transmission sensor when turning the ignition switch to START. Since I have only the schematic of a Haynes repair manual I could not see, from where the positive for the ignition switch is supplied. It is only mentioned "Hot at all times". I can start the car by jumping the positive of the battery with the RED/LT BLU wire at the plug of the Transmission Range Sensor. Where does the Positive for the Ignition switch comes from? I would appreciate any help. Otto

Bat+ power should be at ignition switch all the time under dash. IDK - probably fused at a main fuse under hood. Power at request of "start" by key leaves on to the neutral safety switch then on to starter. Instead of adding power to that switch (dangerous!!) why not see if power even get to and goes thru the ignition switch first? T

If the car will run by jumping out the starter circuit, then the ignition switch is obviously getting power to "key on". You need to check that wire where it comes out of the ignition switch and see if it has power there with the key held in "start" position. If the dash lights up with key on but there is not power on that wire in "start", then you likely have a bad ignition switch. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

If this has an aftermarket alarm or remote start system, you might want to take that into consideration also. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

That would show up when you test the output at the ignition switch.

T Thank you very much for the advice. I had no time to look further to the problem. At the moment I start by touching a wire to the battery positive. I can make this a bit safer by incorporating a 10 A fuse. I assume that I have again a problem at In-Line plug C222 (see the thread "PCM for Sable 97" dated July 12, 2012. You gave me at this time valuable information and I solved the cruise control problem by installing a wire from the cockpit to the motor compartment). Since I have more problems on the car (see thread "Sable 97 shakes when brake is applied" dated June 27, 2015) it might be time to retire the car. You advised me also in this matter and I will look into it. This morning I took out the fuse of the ABS thinking this can cause the problem. However there was no improvement. I like the wagon very much. It has lots of space to put all the tools in which I need at our glider club, where I fly gliders and do part time maintenance on gliders and other moving equipment. The Sable or Taurus wagons are good for my needs. The wagons are low and the roof can easily be loaded with bulky goods. Unfortunately in the present SUV time there are no such station cars more available. Otto

I found when checking the wires at the ignition switch something does not make sense. The red/light blue wire should be hot only when the switch is turned to start. However it is hot already in the the position run. What is wrong in my assumption? To make it possible to start the car from inside the cockpit I soldered a wire to the red/ light blue at the gear selector switch and wired it back to the cockpit. Another wire I soldered to the red/light blue at the key switch. Now I can start the car with the key in running and touching the two wires together. At least this make live a bit easier. I will install a push button until I have the right solution. Otto

There has to be something wrong with your testing. You are correct that that wire should only be hot in "start" and it can't be hot all the time or the starter would be engaged all thew time ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I tried the best when testing. The red/light blue wire at the key is not always hot. It is hot only in run and start position of the key. I will install a push button for the time being. I have to look closer into the schematics which I have on a CD where the problem might be. At least the line-in plug C2231 (I hope to remember right because I have the CD not hand right now) is involved. Otto

Unless there is more than one of that color wire, it cannot be hot in "run" position. It would keep the starter engaged.

Thank you for your interest! I checked briefly the documentation I have. It is a CD with a Ford Technical Service Information, Electronic Publications. It is for all Ford cars of the year 1997. I purchased it online from someone I think he was based in Great Briton. I got from there also the disk for 1995 Ford cars when I had problem with my 1995 Taurus station car. I think I paid for the CD about 20 EUR. I could not find the source on the internet anymore when I was looking for a disk for 2000 Ford cars, because my wife drives a Taurus of this year. Since I am in short time right now, I did not yet look under the dash board again to which wire I soldered the supply wire. It might be hooked up to key connector C299 which feeds in run and start the Constant Relay Module, the Ignition coils and the Radio Noise Capacitor. The push button works fine and starts the car when I keep the ignition key in the run position. It is almost like in in a present generation car! Otto
