Hi all!
I have a Toyota Granvia '96 KCH10W (basically a HiAce) 3.0LTdi, with 165km, which is throwing an error with the SRS airbag light staying on permanently. These are Jap imports here in NZ, which are next to impossible to find real service information on, and I don't have the thousands of dollars I have been told to expect to fix this issue at an auto sparky. So, as a qualified computer techie, I should be able to handle it myself, right?
Using the onboard diagnostics port in the engine bay, the ECU (and a chart of error codes I found on the net) tells me that there is a "short to positive" at the spiral switch (Toyota's name for clock spring).
I did the following:
Remove negative terminal from battery, wait 15 minutes.
Disassemble the steering wheel, being very careful with the airbag.
Re-attach negative terminal to battery.
Measure the voltages pre clock spring and post clock spring -> srs airbag plug. Both identical; one wire at 1.64V +ve, the other at 13.45V +ve.
No short found. Disassembled and checked the clock spring anyway, no fault found. Reassembled and tested again as per above results.
Made a test shunt to emulate the airbag, as per How To Make: DIY Airbag Tester for airbag diagnosis. (loopback 2.2Ohm resistor) No change in results. (therefore no fault in airbag?)
So my questions are:
What voltages should be there, entering and exiting the clock spring, and are they the right polarity?
Is there another way to test the system?
Is the ECU even telling the truth? Can it be reset without having to re-tune everything in the car that relies upon it?

Just some FYI on this: This site is US based so limited for some critical details as this isn't sold here exactly as sold in NZ.
Ideas for you I know near impossible:
* Try to get some direct help from Toyota, with VIN# at hand might get some diagrams and specs?
Problems include > it's a 1996 now old but is OBDII pointed to a problem is just something to work with for now.
Things that will matter: It's old as cars go now so probably not yours from new with a full history of what it's been thru. If airbag has already deployed and been fixed ma be unknown but shouldn't be.
Any aftermarket items installed that tapped into wires in a hunt for plain Bat+ and Bat- power for some item that already failed and was removed disturbed those wires if so.
If there is flooding or collisions in its history that much harder.
> An issue for a whole era is the bags themselves were recalled to be replaced for untold millions of units not done to many at all that I know of too costly for the maker to afford just let time pass and SHUT UP seems to be the end of that.
Personal note on age and if the airbag would work as designed now is unknown. The several, most over 10 model years old didn't work properly either going off when NOT needed or not going off when called for so a "Rock and Hard Place" thing. Can't prove much.
$$ problems on your part isn't helping and not so sure anyone wants to put their name on some fix that makes the light go out and leave it a mystery till it's a parts car I bet most are already but can't know that either.
Keep trying with Toyota, direct or ask a dealer if you can get contact info on what to do.
Have as much info on this car as possible at the ready if you do get through.

The voltage question you are asking for is the exact information that won't be accessible for this vehicle. You are approaching it the right way but we just don't have the specs you need.
It might help is we had the code number and maybe knowing which Toyota sold here that this car is fashioned after. Maybe if you post a picture of the vehicle, it will look like something we are familiar with and have specs for.
EDIT:
Ok, I Googled this thing and it appears to be a full size van. Unfortunately Toyota doesn't sell anything like that here, only mini-vans. I'll see if the Sienna has any info

OK I captured a diagnostic tree for code 12 on a 96 Previa which is the closest thing to what you have even though it's not identical.
Now the problem is the file is a complete web page and even though I made it into a PDF, it's too large to send through messaging.
