Before you going spending hours running new wires that may or may not work, do a little more diagnostics. disconnect the wire entirely from the starter to see if it still blows the fuse.

Also, take a real hard look at your existing harness. Wires just don't simply short circuit to other wires or grounds. They either get rubbed through or burned through and chances are if there is an exposed wire somewhere, it's not the only one and only the beginning of the problems.

Yes, Tom, I agree to first check the condition at the connecting points before replacing the whole wire. Thank you!

Hammer Time, I agree with that notion. Confirm the condition! So I proceed to disconnect the wire from the starter. If the fuse doesn't blow (and it shouldn't), that would be further confirmation that the short is in the brown wire that connects to the starter. That is to say, if the fuse only blows when the wire is connected, and there is nothing else on that circuit (as indicated by wiring diagram), the brown wire is the suspect. Correct? Keeping in mind, of course, that the starter was already changed, and that didn't resolve anything. I played the 90% odds with that, and lost.

No, that is not right.

If you disconnect the wire from the starter end and the short goes away, the problem is in the starter or the connection at the starter.

If the problem is still present, cut the wire near the ignition switch and if it still doesn't stop, then the wire isn't the problem.

Even if the wire is the problem. there would likely be other wires damaged and you need to find that spot.

Hello friends! An update. So just to refresh, early July I said that my mechanic changed the Oxygen Sensor (seemed OK to do, some have reported that to cause fuse 8 IGN/START/FUEL to blow), and he changed the Ignition Switch (pointless based on the circuitry...since the fuse only blows when the starter relay is IN). That resolved the issue just 2 weeks. I was not aware that the car had a 2nd Oxygen sensor, this one the "downstream". He went straight there, and disconnected it, and it failed the test. Disconnecting the downstream sensor caused the fuse to hold. He should have changed both sensors at the same time. But that's where we are at. I've read that this oxygen sensor issue is common on the 2.4 motored cars. Something about the heater circuits of the oxygen sensors causing a short to ground and blowing fuse 8. Could be the permanent fix, or else we will continue with the advice here soon enough. Of course I will report back, and thanks once again for the genuine interest in helping us out and sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated!

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The 0/2 heaters are powered by the PCM which is indirectly powered by different fuses. Fuse #8 doesn't seem to have anything to do with 0/2 sensor heaters.

No argument there, Hammer Time. It's reported as one of the quirky things about a Chrysler 2.4, that if the O2 sensor shorts to ground it can cause Fuse 8 to blow. And I can't dispute the test. No fuse was holding at this point...not the correct 20 AMP, nor a 25 or 30. All would pop at the turn of the key. Mechanic removed the Bank 2 oxygen sensor, said "start the car", and it started right up. Bought a new one and the car is starting.

Of course, it was starting for a bit when the "upstream Bank 1" sensor was changed, too. May or may not be out of the woods now that both O2 sensors are changed. But I sure hope so!

The nightmare is over! I'll say what many have said: This will be my last Stratus. Too many quirky things! Aside from the quirky things, it's a nice driving car. But the quirky things can be exhausting!

So changing BOTH oxygen sensors resolved Fuse 8 IGNITION / START / FUEL from blowing. Car has started every time for 5 weeks now. I was fortunate to find 2 instances on the web where changing oxygen sensors resolved this. Makes little sense, but a lot about these cars makes little sense.

So for those who encounter the problem of Fuse 8 blowing in a 2.4...90% of the time the starter needs replacing, 1% of the time the oxygen sensors need replacing, and 9% of the time it can be any of many other things.

Been a while. Glad that worked. Can't argue with it working for 5 weeks now any which way.
