While trickle charging battery dashboard display pulsing

I connected a trickle charger to my battery while installed in vehicle. As soon as i connected it, the speedometer needle and the tachometer needle are both pulsing, bouncing back and forth from 0 where they usually rest, to about halfway up the display (speed to ~60 mph, tach to ~4000). It's pretty rapid, about 1 pulse per second. Battery charger itself has a fault indicator and it is not showing a fault, it shows "normally charging". Any idea why this is happening or what it means? MAZDA CX-5. Thanks for any help you can give.

I don't know but wouldn't use that "trickle" charger or try another or this one on some other battery. Have you read instruction for the thing? There are 100s of type out there no telling if that one is good, defective or this car is still in run position this thing is confusing it?? What model charger and what model year of car? Why are you interested in using a charger unless you leave this sitting for long times often wouldn't need to do this at all, Tom

It sounds like the rate amps from the charger is interacting with either the body control module or the instrument panel cluster. It probably isn't a big deal, but if it's me I would disconnect the battery cables and charge the battery while it is disconnected from the car.

Thanks for that response. It does raise the issue "how would i know if accessories are on in the car, since the dash board is dead", and that's the only way to tell if accessories are on as the dashboard is lit! However, it now occurred to me to turn off headlights and that stopped the pulsing. I leave the headlights in the on position all the time, as they go off after 90 seconds when you leave the car (that should not be why the battery is dead). Thanks for the tip!

! These usually are not for "DEAD" batteries rather to maintain a good one as good longer or just fully charged up for next use. Delayed things of all sorts should be off some of these chargers are sensing 6 or 12V from a good battery not a dead one. Car has lost info anyway get that battery out of it play with it outside of car to declare if it's any good all are marked how old they are embossed in case hidden, encrypted this or that way elusive on purpose sometimes for warranty purposes. Outside with this one it may have shorted inside, ruined charger or vs versa? Gotta read stuff some AGM batteries or sealed lead/acid require different ways and say so. Side note for delayed lighting: Thats's suicide engineering doomed to fail, tricked by the wrong voltage of a dying battery there's more wrong now possible or likely than this attempt is going to fix IMO, Tom

Do as Tom instructed and get this battery charged when it's not in the car. It sounds like the battery is so dead that your trickle charger is not supplying enough power for the modules to activate and shut down. It sounds like you are partially triggering the security system ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
