My 1997 Lumina has a problem - the windshield washer quit working. When I turn it on, not only does it not spray the windshield, but the wipers suddenly go very slowly, as if there is a drag on them. Hopefully an easy fix? Thanks! ---Dan, danhughes@juno.com

I fixed it! I pulled the motor, whacked it a few times on the concrete, and now it works fine. So my new question is, can I expect it to fail again soon, or will my fix last a while?

Since you know the problem, repair it the right way! Why wait until you're out somewhere and it starts raining and they decide to fail again. This time the wipers may fail altogether. If it was my car,i'd fix it right... Good luck Jim

Thanks, Jim. I'm confused - if the washer motor fails, it might also take out the wiper motor? I'm a novice; I just knew that sometimes motors that lock up can be "unstuck" by jostling them. I assume you're saying I need to put in a new washer motor? Sorry for my ignorance.... Thanks, ---Dan

I thought you meant you took off the wiper motor and whacked it around to get it to work. Wiper motors can be the cause of inoperative washers too. But since i know now that you whupped on the washer pump, then i'd say, replace the washer pump. They are relatively inexpensive. Forgive me,I'm old!! Click here.......... Jim

Jim, it says "pump must be primed before use." What does that mean?

Primed would mean it wants to be wet to work - allow water to get to pump first, then try it, T
