chevy 1990 ignition

i have a 1990 chevy beretta 2.2L 4cylinder. and my ignition broke awhile back stuck in the on position. i had to pull #1 fuse to turn the car off. i wired up 2 switches acc, and on. and a push button to start.the ignition was too hard to take out. all that works fine but when i connect the battery i hear a beep inside the car, just like 1 beep. i have to unplug the battery so it wont die. or is that beep normal, i unplugged the 4(?) ignition wires. what do you guys think

Well........... you do what you have to in a jam but I'd put it all back the way it should be. Perhaps a whole steering column depending on how it broke, T

its actually in alot better condition than you would think, besides the ignition. its pretty messed up now lol. the ignition broke in the on position, but it turned very freely, but it was obviiously stripped out or something. but what i was looking for is like is there a buzzer conneced with the ignition or something?

Buzzer: When original it would have buzzed or dinged if key was in and door was opened I think with engine off and some cars would buzz if shut off with lights still on. Some buzzed if seat belt wasn't fastened. Just curious - is the key itself locked in with the tumblers or the ignition switch further down column usually which moves a rod of some creation. The lock cylinder itself just is there such that it won't turn without a key and when not in run position locks the wheel from turning. This is a 1990 so would be rare if it had an air bag so digging into column isn't so hard. Takes a socket for a nut of the shaft then special tool to depress the star wheel so you can get a small snap right off and star wheel then will come out. Near sure you could rent the kit to remove the wheel and star wheel if inclined to put this all back to original. Whole lock cylinder should just be help by a bolt not easy for a would be thief to get at on purpose. That vintage and older was pretty easy to get into with a coat hanger. Cars with power locks many times you could just hit the power door lock button! Used to either just get in and keys were there and sometimes folks would drop or lose them down drain in parking lots or whatever. If I could see the keys (no such luck but would look) I'd have fished them out somehow. At the age now a whole column could be easy if folks junked a car and left the keys. Plastic parts that don't match color if you care can be dyed (just like paint but real thin) and many new parts all come in just one color. You can buy dinky little cans but must be sprayed. If plain black or white - you can buy can's ready to use. A maybe for other colors? Sold at some NAPA parts stores in spray - body supply place to mix to match. Have a can of black right here. Martin Senour Paints, Clevland, OH. No website but I'd just Google them out if you are interested at all Laugh - There I am - people all around with new ign. lock cyllinder - steering wheel off.

next time ill try to engage the seatbelt when im plugging in the battery to see if i hear it. no the keys outta it. before it broke i could take the key out at pretty much any time (acc, on) me and my friend tryed to pull the steering coloum once but said screw it because it would be to hard lol. would there just be away to disable it so it wont kill my battery? the ignition has no use to me anymore, just i cant get it out. and the ignition is where it normally should be

Check out battery area of parts outlets and even department stores. They make quick disconnects which if enough room to play at negative battery post some just slide in and I think just a thumb screw or other assorted ways. Collectors and the antique crowd will put these on. For day to day this would still be obnoxious but could buy you some time and a little less aggravation for now. As you know the car's computer loses memory along with clock and radio settings but you are doing that now. You only need do this to negative post. Positive can't do squat without negative hooked up too. If you are going to keep this car I'd till fix it right. Seat belt sounds and lights: It would be making noise or perhaps just a light on dash when not connected AND key is run mode. Not sure it will operate all rigged up now, T

i ws working on it yesterday and there was 2 wires coming from where the ignition is, and i got rid of them. but the battery still dies. i guess its time to start taking fuses out and see if the battery lives. thanks tom for your help
