Not sure how you figured that out with the coil in the cap but probably would just replace it and the cap and rotor, T OOPS - somehow didn't see that you had replaced cap and rotor

From here I would check the distrutor's shaft bearings. I'ts never happened to me on the HEI but if it can wobble around a lot it might be able to make erratic sparks. I haven't found a local rebuilder for one I need done in a 1948 tractor and haven't asked yet if I can just get one rebuilt. For the Chev HEI they probably aren' t that expensive anymore. Good luck, T

Is the grounding rang still in the cap? Sounds like the system is looking for a ground and is grounding through the shaft. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Sounds like way2old hit the nail on the head. When you remove the coil, there should be a round rubber gasket with a metal rod and spring under it. If it is there replace the rubber gasket. Also, there should be a ground clip under the coil that plugs into the connector at the distributor. If it is gone, replace that also. The only other thing I can see is maybe a faulty ignition coil insulator housing. If that's the case, try another brand coil. Preferably a Delco. Steve
