I own a 2005 mercury sable LS, v6 3.0 24 dohc. I have a left rear brake light problem as when the brake pedal is depressed the left side only does not brighten it's cluster of 2-bulbs like the right side does. ALL other lights work normally, tail lights, head lights, backup lights, right rear brake light, and the high mounted brake light. Do these 2-brake lights have 2- different filaments in them to make them brighter when the brake pedal is depressed?

1. Make sure correct bulbs. Calls for if my look up is correct this part #..................
I believe there are two filaments in each, one for running lights other brighter should be stop and turn signal. If both I suspect a weak ground that the both share right near back side of socket you might be able to see it go to body ground or it shares ground with other side? Would be looking for something like that OR wrong bulbs installed?

Thank you for your replay to my post. ALL other lights work just fine including the turn signal liggts. If I had a bad ground connection would not other lights be affected, like the turn signal? Bob81

? Are turn signals using the same bulb and RED in the back or AMBER in the back? Some locations require amber rear turn signals and that part # for bulbs suggest it's using the same bulb filament inside for both brake and turn.
Possible that ground is shared and enough for one side but not for both? It's hard to believe that both sockets have the identical problem but possible.
Are the bulbs the same on both sides? If not that would be it most likely. If they are swap them anyway, use bulb grease and note condition of the sockets and see if problem follows the bulbs or stays the same.
On maybe list is if this car has trailer wiring added it's messing with wiring for that side somewhere and rule that out if so,

Thank you all for your advice and help. As it turned out it was nothing more than an open filament in a two filament 3057 bulb. Thanks again. Bob81
