horn honks

I have a 1997 buick lesabre and a 1999 buick lesabre The 1997 lesabre horn will start honking nonstop and I have to punch the steering wheel hard to get it to stop. I had to disconnect the horn wiring on the 1997 lesabre so it does not wake up the neighbors at night. I'm thinking I may jsut just put a horn button on it Now the 1999 lesabre is doing the same thing. What causes this.

some thoughts - keyless entry module (RFA module) - anti theft (CTD module) - horn relay - remote starter- steering wheel horn circuit grounding. scan for B series codes. PS Always set RAV to no horn when using FOB why should I have to hear that Sh!t.

What! Two different cars (same makes) of yours do the same thing? For the moment while I catch my breath just maybe - are keys mixed up and an alarm set up has been triggered? I can't think of a reason for BOTH doing this or what could be in common to cause that. Yes if just one screwed up hunt for the trouble but BOTH needs a common reason to me anyway, T

My wife told me that if I push the lock and unlock the horn on the 97 lesabre will go off. she told me that after i told her I had to hit the steering wheel before the horn would go off. I pulled the electrical connections on both horns on the 97 so it won't start blowing at night under the neighbors bedroom window. I don't know about the 99 lesabre but it did not immediately shut off the horn when I hit the horn. I pulled it over to the shoulder and banged on the steering wheel about 4 times and finally the horn quit blowing. Its only bot 108,000 miles on it. I did not try the lock and unlock button. I'll get me a couple horn buttons and rewire the horns to it. It is really weird how both are doing it now.

I will probably not wire it up using a relay. I will probably connect the horn button to the ground wire and the hot wire from the horn to a inline fuse connected to the Alternator since it is close to the horn. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Not to do that is a suggestion. Leave the alternator out of it. Find out why both cars do this. Stuff happens but both vehicles have seemed to suffer the same something if only beating on the steering wheels in rage over something - it's just not so common for TWO in same household? IDK is the answer so far from me. There's a clock spring that can do this but both at once in a similar way doesn't add up. Wherever horn button(s) are located they are usually giving existing power a ground I thought on GMs for ages and many in general. Directionals and everything else work properly or any odd noises just turning wheels in the column? If broken parts now in column just adding a horn doesn't get broken parts out so really need to find out what happened, T

Well with the horns are disconnected & so far the battery has not run down. I was not aware that the bcm could run down the battery if the horns are disconnected. I do know that you can sometimes hear the door locks locking and unclocking on the 1997 buick when it is just setting there. So, I suspect the security system may be screwed up. I wish I could just disconnect the security system, I don't know how to fix a BCM problem. If you do then I am all ears. If you can explain how to do that I won't need horn buttons . As stated the securty system on the 1997 has always caused weird problems. I wish I could eliminate it. I really don't care if someone steals the cars. I have already eliminated the need for a chip in the key. Until I figure out how to fix it different I intend to go ahead and hook up the horn buttons until I know the bcm is running down the battery. It could be something else causing the horn honk. I guess it could also be grounding out under the steering wheel. So, until I figure out how if I need to deal with the BCM I will cut the wires coming off the connectors that I pulled off the horns and hook up the new wires to those connectors. Both these cars are rarely driven. I know the 97 had been setting under a tree for almost a year with the battery pulled out so when and if the horn was activated it would not honk. I pulled the battery because its honing woke up the neighbor. It was not honking when i pulled the battery. Sure enough when I put the old battery back in and as soon as i hooked it up the horns started blaring. I punched the steering wheel and it stopped. After a few days it started honklng again and I pulled the electrical connectors off. Now its been setting out there about a week with the horns disconnected with the battery still in it and it still starts fine. If it still starts ok after a few months go by then I figure putting the horn button on it won't cause any problems. I will go out today and reconnect one of the connectors and see if the horns honk. If so i will know if the car still starts that the battery does not discharge with the connectors pulled. I will cross my fingers. I will keep doing that until reconnecting the connector causes the 97 to honk. I'll check it every week. My wife may drive it this winter because it does not have ac. If not I will put a trickle charger on the battery . At least from what I see you feel the horn button will work ok. I am not into junking the old cars. I usually only use them for backup. I sure don't want to spend any money trying to fix any problem that it would take a mechanic to figure out. If the bcm is screwed up I assume that means the security system is screwed up. The cars aren't worth fixing . If I can just get them to stop honking all the time I will be happy. I've got two other vehicles that we drive everyday. I use them as back up if my kids need another vehicle to get to work because theirs break down.

Hot wiring the horns is not going to fix your problems. You are having an issue with the door locks also. If you have a BCM starting to fail, the horn going off is the least of your problems. The BCM has the ability to activate both the door locks and the horn relay. Disconnecting the horns will not stop that and the relay or door locks activating will kill the battery. You should be targeting your actual problem, not the symptoms. X2 scan for codes 'B' series. do you have a remote starter, alarm or added aftermarket electrical device? The modules I mentioned can control the horn -

I was hoping the horn was the only major drain if the security system is screwed up. I see now that the interior lights may come on too. I doubt the time it spends locking and unlocking the doors on it own will run the battery down if it is still used to drive my wife to work every day. The alternator should keep the battery charged up if the only loss is because it is unlocking and locking the doors on its own. It only does that sporatically. It doesn't do that all the time. I guess I will find out. I will leave the horn hooked up until it honks and then see if there is still a drain on the battery after i pull the horn electrical connection. I sure have no problem pulling the interior light out too. I have no idea where the Map, and rfa module are. I figure following gm logic they have them stuck up under the passenger side of the dash where they are hard to get to so a thief and the owner will have a problem getting to them. I sure don't have the testing equipment to check them. If I take it to a mechanic that is certified and can fix these systems i figure i will only find him at a dealer. I sure do not intend to spend more than the car is worth to get it to stop honking because of a security system that I don't even need. It won't take long to go through my social security check at a dealer with those old buicks. I can get almost 300 bucks at pic a part for them. Then I could go get me one of the new Youkons that my wife tells me about that the robots she works on paints at Gm. Depending on the model they cost between 60 and 100+k. That is a option I am not interested in if I can just get the horn to stop honking and keep the battery charged. I figure they now only sell those vehicles to the Federal Govt and the stupid tax payer is unwillingly paying for them because they are stupid and don't know what the govt is doing. That way GM does not go under again. Nobody i know can afford a 100k car. Gm has changed my wife is the only white person working in the paint depart. The rest of the people are black and are all democrats. Soon with all the open borders they will be brown but the hourly pay will start dropping. If that does not lower it they will move the plant to Mexico where the hourly rate will be 1/10 of what it is here. When that happens the Mexicans who waded across the Rio Grande will wade back across along with the blacks (assuming Mexico does lets them)to get a job in Mexico building those Yukons. Go figure I guess that is the democratic way of controlling immigration. Send all the jobs to Mexico so the Mexicans will stay there to work. the lazy ones can still just stay here and get welfare. I may just pull the horn relay and switch it around to see if it is the problem and then pull it instead of of pulling the connectors to disable the horn. I may even hook that relay up to a toggle switch so I can turn the horn on inside the car and drive the car and still be able to activate the horn if i need to honk.
