inverter shock problem Sign In

Anyone know why when I touched the metal case of my 12 v inverter it sparked and blew a fuse. ?

You are talking about an inverter that you clip to battery or use a power port to get 110 AC volts that has cooling fins on exterior type thing?

I say if the OUTSIDE is empowered by voltage the thing is bad and wouldn't use it.

Curious - a fuse on the device or a vehicle?

Hi. Thanks for reply. Actually in UK so it's a 230 volt unit plugged into aux power socket in boot of Ford Galaxy mpv. It blew fuse in car serving aux power socket. It's a new inverter and now I think of it this happened once before with another inverter which I binned. It's a neg earth car and I bought inverter from UK dealer. Baffled.

Even with Euro voltage the thing should be the same idea. It still shouldn't be "live" on exterior of the thing if that's what you meant. If overloaded for any reason you should hope it's blowing fuses and not burning wiring.

If it's blowing fuses in other vehicles as well it has to be shorted inside somehow unless an item is already plugged into it that exceeds its ability plain drawing too much.

I have a few that wouldn't power much. They do make a power port that has clips to go direct to a battery and let the inverter itself pop out a breaker which any with any real power should have.

If the ones you are getting are always screwing up you are either overloading them and they are not protected to shut down or some other reason they aren't working out.

Perhaps if you need something a lot you might install a separate battery and leave the vehicle out of the scene and just charge the battery up. Lots to think about doing stuff like that and a battery where it doesn't belong full time and so on.

If your outer case has power in it that can short and blow a fuse, the inverter is junk.

230v that plugs into a 12v outlet? How is that one possible? Thats the voltage my arc welder runs at and the power feed to it needs a 50 amp breaker to work right.
