Re: nissan wont start Sign In

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Burned? Soaked with antifreeze but "burned?" If it cranks and doesn't even try to start it shouldn't be from the alternator itself but the list Hammer provided is still what to do AND then immediately find out exactly what is causing the leak - that's a reason for overheating big time then subsequent problems small to OMG!

Re: nissan wont start Sign In

white powder stuff thick that I know as burned antifreeze all over the alternator..the hose to the engine from the radiator is right above the alternator...i assume the clam broke/hose went and leaked onto alternator..ive had that hose go before,(not in this car) they get old they leak...it was a brand new alternator the leak caused it to malfunction.....thats what I'm thinking....does anyone know will a prolonged leak harm the alternator..i think it will...bty there was no overheating...

OK, we'll say it again. The alternator is not causing you problem. Follow the test sequence if you want to find out what is wrong with it.

Re: nissan wont start Sign In

And your question was answered. Yes, it could harm the alternator. No, it is not the cause of your no start.

You have not mentioned anything about the battery being dead. Is it?

the battery was still working but when I tried to start it today it made a power drain sound....but I never noticed any power issues until it stopped working....i think the antifreeze leak have been going on for awhile.prevous owner replaced several alternators.....the reserve was full so its not a big leak..ill know more tommorow...bty what do you do if the alternator is still good clean it off?

Re: nissan wont start Sign In

We don't seem to be on the right page here. If the engine doesn't "crank" they you get the battery checked, charged or replaced as needed. Sport - the alternator could short out from being wet with anything but IMO "burnt" throws me off. Antifreeze will boil down on something hot which alternator really shouldn't be to it's coloring. Burnt suggests it was glowing red hot or something.

It doesn't need the alternator to just start for a second so we have to get past that. It's probably not working that's the result not the first likely cause of not starting.

First things first - if engine isn't cranking get the battery situation fixed so it can. There's not much to test if it doesn't crank. Just that then you can test for spark and fuel and down the list posted already.

It's not all over just running when or if it get to that then go on and fix all the reasons it's leaking antifreeze and quickly find out if overheating was involved how much more is needed. One item at a time find out first why it doesn't crank if not then when it does the list why it doesn't run - if only for a few seconds.

Something - do something,

T
